Some injuries don’t just cause pain.
They can change your brain’s awareness of where your body is in space.
This is called proprioception, and when it’s disrupted, you may notice:

• Clumsiness
• Feeling off balance
• Bumping into things
• Motion sensitivity
• Not feeling like yourself””

It’s not just in your head. It’s in your nervous system.

Dysautonomia isn’t just about heart rate.
Your autonomic nervous system depends on accurate spatial input from the vestibular system and cerebellum. When you stand, gravity pulls blood downward.
Your brain must detect that shift and adjust blood pressure and heart rate accordingly.
If those balance networks aren’t functioning well, the autonomic response can be off. Sometimes the issue isn’t just regulation.
It’s the input the system is receiving.

Stuttering is often blamed on nerves or anxiety. In reality, it involves specific brain networks responsible for motor control, timing, and auditory processing. When those systems are out of sync, speech can block or repeat.

The optokinetic reflex helps your brain stabilize moving images. It develops around 6 months old and should work automatically for life.
When it’s not functioning well, visually busy environments like grocery stores, crowds, or driving in the back seat can trigger dizziness or motion sickness.
This reflex connects your visual system and vestibular system. If there’s a mismatch, your brain feels it.

Brain fog is a term people use to describe slowed thinking, poor concentration, and mental fatigue.
These symptoms can be influenced by sleep quality, stress, inflammation, hormonal changes, or post-concussion effects.
Because it’s common, many people dismiss it.
But persistent cognitive symptoms are signals. And signals are worth understanding.

Romberg’s test helps assess the dorsal column pathway, which sends proprioceptive information to the brain.
Changes in sway with eyes closed can indicate how well the nervous system is processing sensory input for balance and spatial orientation. Each finding contributes to a personalized treatment plan!

Do you randomly bump into counters, door frames, or furniture?
It might not be clumsiness.
Dr. Blake explains a simple in-clinic test called point localization that shows how well your brain maps your body in space.

This small exam detail reveals a lot more about brain function than people realize.
Dr. Gabella explains why we check your mouth during a functional neurology exam.

You might be surprised that we test smell during a neurological exam.
Dr. Gabella explains why your sense of smell tells us a lot about brain function.
It’s something you can easily test at home too!

Do images linger in your vision after you look away?
This “ghosting” happens when the brain is firing too high and inhibitory pathways aren’t keeping things in check. Certain lights—like LEDs and fluorescents—can make it worse, while softer incandescent light and “brain breaks” can help calm the system. Stepping outside, wearing sunglasses, or just taking a moment to breathe can reduce visual overstimulation.

Brain Rehabilitation Center in Raleigh, North Carolina.

Dr. Gabella is a Functional Neurologist and a Fellow of The American Board of Brain Injury and Rehabilitation. We offer treatment for Neurological Disorders, Concussion, mTBI, Neuro-developmental Disorder, Vestibular disorders, and Neurodegenerative Diseases.

Brain based therapies are used to re-wire and re-map brain connections to restore proper neurological function. Treatment is tailored specifically to the individual patient’s need. Vestibular rehabilitation, eye movement exercises, and somatosensory electrical stimulation are a few of the many forms of treatment utilized.

Dr. Gabella is affiliated with The Carrick Institute for Graduate studies and directly trained under Dr. Fredrick Carrick.
