✨ New on the blog: What happens when an eating disorder therapist opens a gym? Spoiler: it’s not your typical gym. 💛

Movement shouldn’t feel conditional, intimidating, or make you feel inferior. It should be a space rooted in safety, choice, and joy. In our latest post, Brit shares their journey from the fitness world into mental health, and ultimately to creating a space where wellness looks different. Where movement connects to care, not punishment, and where your body is celebrated as it is.

💬 Dive into the story behind why this gym (movement studio) exists, and what makes it countercultural.

Embodied Narratives: Reclaiming the Story of Your Body: A 7-week HAES-aligned, trauma-informed group experience

February 4th-March 18th on Wednesdays from 6:15-7:45pm

In a culture where conversations about bodies are filtered through diet rhetoric and profit-driven beauty and health standards, it can feel radical (scary, even) to land in your body and claim your own story. This 7-week group invites you to explore embodiment outside the buzzwords of capitalism and diet culture, asking: Who are you outside of these influences? What is the true experience of being in your body?

Through grounding practices, somatic embodiment techniques, and expressive journaling (including collage), we’ll create space to understand and share the story of your body.

This group is HAES-aligned and trauma-informed, welcoming 18+ individuals with all bodies and backgrounds. Whether you are new to embodiment work or seeking deeper integration, join us in a supportive space to reclaim, reimagine, and rewrite your body’s story.

Mainstream fitness wasn’t built with gender-diverse bodies in mind, and that harm is not accidental.

When movement spaces rely on binaries, make assumptions about bodies, or push cis-normative ideals, they don’t just exclude trans, nonbinary, and gender-expansive people, they actively create barriers to care, safety, and joy.

Fitness should never require you to explain your body, perform a gender, or endure discomfort to “belong.”

Everyone deserves movement spaces that are informed, affirming, and rooted in autonomy, not surveillance, shame, or assumptions.

At Current Wellness, we believe:
✨ Bodies are not problems to be fixed
✨ Strength isn’t gendered
✨ Safety includes emotional and identity safety

You deserve to move in ways that honor who you are, not who fitness culture thinks you should be.

Head to our blog to read Vic Abate’s (he/they) full blog post called “From Harm to Healing: Why Trans-Affirming Fitness is Essential and Achievable.” Shoutout to for being a resource for this post. 💛

We are thrilled to welcome Vic to our fitness team! He joined us as a Full Time Fitness Instructor and Personal Trainer this week and is now accepting new clients. You’ll see him all over the schedule starting next Monday. Come check out his class for a great workout and a good time!

Learn more about Vic here:

Vic (he/they) is a NASM certified personal trainer. He was born and raised in High Point NC, where he would develop a passion for mindful movement and sports. Vic holds a Bachelor’s of Science degree from NC State in Environmental Sciences and he plans to expand his education in the realm of kinesiology.

As a transgender man, Vic understands that there is stigma and fear associated with marginalized identities attempting to access or participate within fitness spaces. Vic combats this by stepping outside the gender norm and by promoting inclusion in all fitness spaces. We all can make the fitness industry safer and healthier for all by loving and respecting our bodies as the beautiful beings they are. Vic is excited to learn more about your identity and previous experiences and offer freeing, vibrant, and fun fitness classes/sessions.

Lately, Vic has been trying new things such as: snowboarding, crocheting, juggling, and writing music. This approach to expanding his skillset has allowed him to find creative ways to incorporate mindful movement into daily life while maintaining balance. When not at Current, you can find Vic at the gym, hanging out with his friends/partner, or exploring nature.

Our Story

Current Wellness is a wellness center for physical and mental health in downtown Raleigh. "The Current" is open now for online and outdoor fitness classes and will be opening in-person later in 2020. Our new building will include a movement studio for functional fitness and yoga; a teaching kitchen for food education; and private co-working offices for mental health counseling, bodywork, and other wellness practitioners.

Founders Brit Guerin and Nathan Williams bring diverse backgrounds and areas of expertise to this venture. Brit has a professional background in fitness, mental health, and educational programming, which is complemented by Nathan’s experiences in outdoor education; project management; and higher education.

The Current strives to be an inclusive space where all people feel welcome and a community of wellness practitioners serving the mind, body, and community needs of Raleigh.
