For many people, summer is the perfect time to get back into exercising. But if itโ€™s been a few months, you want to start out slowly and strategically.

Here are our top five tips to ensure a safe return to regular exercise:

๐Ÿญ. ๐—ฆ๐˜๐—ฟ๐—ฒ๐˜๐—ฐ๐—ต-Prepare your body for an activity with an active warm-up of dynamic stretching followed by a cool-down with static stretching.

๐Ÿฎ. ๐—™๐—ผ๐—น๐—น๐—ผ๐˜„ ๐—ฎ ๐—ฃ๐—ฟ๐—ผ๐—ด๐—ฟ๐—ฒ๐˜€๐˜€๐—ถ๐—ผ๐—ป-Progression in exercise is the concept of increasing the volume and intensity of training over time. This approach not only helps avoid injuries but also improves performance over time.

๐Ÿฏ. ๐——๐—ถ๐˜ƒ๐—ฒ๐—ฟ๐˜€๐—ถ๐—ณ๐˜†-Training diversity, or cross-training, allows the body to adapt to a wide variety of stressors, leading to a more optimal fitness level.

๐Ÿฐ. ๐—ฆ๐—ฝ๐—ฟ๐—ฒ๐—ฎ๐—ฑ ๐—ถ๐˜ ๐—ข๐˜‚๐˜-If possible, spread your activity out throughout the week. You are better off scheduling shorter workouts every other day than cramming multiple intense workouts into the weekend.

๐Ÿฑ. ๐—›๐˜†๐—ฑ๐—ฟ๐—ฎ๐˜๐—ฒ-Water is essential for nearly every system in the body to function well. A good rule of thumb for an adequate daily intake is around 11.5 cups (or 2.7 liters) for women and 15.5 cups (or 3.7 liters) for men. Add more for exercising in hot weather, if you sweat a lot or getting over an illness.

You may be surprised to learn that what you do at home is just as beneficial as the work you do with your physical therapist in the clinic.

A home exercise program (HEP) is a customized set of therapeutic exercises that your PT will teach you. These "homework" exercises will help you reach your physical therapy goals and feel and/or move better long-term.

Following your (HEP) is so important and can help:
โ€ขImprove mobility
โ€ขIncrease strength
โ€ขDevelop muscle memory
โ€ขPrevent future injuries
โ€ขExperience therapeutic gains
โ€ขIncrease the chance of recovery
โ€ขBuild confidence and reduce the fear of injury
โ€ขMaintain strength and function for patients with chronic or progressive conditions

Life can be stressful, no matter the season. But don't let it consume your day or willpower. Stress can linger and show up physically as well as mentally, so finding ways to train your mind and body to relax is essential.

By making a few simple changes in your everyday routine, you can de-stress.

โ€ข Breathe Deeply: By breathing deeply, you are telling your central nervous system that there is no need to panic and to relax.
โ€ข Exercise: Exercising is a perfect fix that can alleviate anxiety and muscle pains and burn off some of that anxious energy.
โ€ขTake a Nap: Stress can play a big role in the quality and length of time we sleep, and we don't even realize it. So squeeze in a few extra hours.
โ€ข Trim Down Your Schedule: Be proactive in ensuring that you accommodate time in your future schedule to focus on yourself.
โ€ข Say No: Don't be afraid to say no to make sure that you can prioritize your schedule to get things done without feeling stressed.
โ€ข Avoid Procrastinating: Avoid putting tasks off until the last minute. Set tasks on your calendar or break them into smaller chunks.
โ€ข Spend Time with Friends and Family: When things get tough, your friends and family can be a great support system.
โ€ข Reduce Your Caffeine Intake: Coffee and caffeine can certainly help you get through the day, but it could be compounding your stress levels.

"I cannot say it enough how thankful I am for Rob and Drayer PT. I came in not knowing what was causing my dizziness but feeling handicapped and held back from the active life I enjoyed before. I was frustrated and losing hope that I'd be able to do even basic things like driving myself again. Rob helped to pinpoint the issue that was causing my dizziness, which lead to a proper diagnosis and medical intervention. Each week, he shared information which helped me understand my diagnosis and offered custom exercises and therapy to address it. I can happily report I am not only driving again, but doing even more than I ever thought possible. I feel like I can live my life again. I would recommend Rob to anyone who needs vestibular therapy. Thank you, Rob!"
