My nervous system is thanking me.
For quite a while now, I have noticed that carrying my phone around, mindlessly reaching for it in brief moments of *freetime*, looking at it frequently without actually knowing why, has made me feel somewhat antsy, restless, more anxious, and less able to simply be and notice the present moments, that, spoiler alert, are often so fleeting.
“Enough”, I told myself. My nervous system is in overdrive and there is nothing I need to frequently *check*.
Turning my phone on silent has been a great step to tune the world out more. Putting it away, out of sight, has allowed me to not just reach for it by default.
I make it a point not to use it in front of our children unless I really have to (and I usually don’t). Because I do not want them to look at the back of a phone when they want - and need - my attention.
No doom scrolling.
No: Always available to everyone at the same time.
Our nervous system doesn’t work that way. We weren’t meant to be accessbile to everyone, all of the time.
Going *back* to a healthier, responsible, slower use of my smartphone - truly for phone, aka communication purposes - has made such a huge difference in my mental and physical wellbeing the last couple of weeks.
I have actively chosen to use my phone with intention, don’t scroll social media but use it with a purpose (small business related posts or responses), and at certain times during the day, when it’s just me (and spoiler alert: that time window is very, very limited).
So, less screen time.
More real moments.
More real dopamine and serotonin.
Funnily enough, my mind feels calmer, my body more regulated. It can’t be a coincidence.
