A lot of people hesitate to start psychiatric medication because they fear it means being on meds for life. We aim to take a different, more hopeful approach. Medication is a tool—not a life sentence—and the real question is whether the benefits outweigh the risks right now. We explore all treatment options, consider what’s already been tried, and make thoughtful decisions based on both support and science.

Most importantly, we aim to help people eventually come off medication when it’s right for them—especially children. The goal isn’t lifelong dependence but long-term wellness.

Working with kids and teens means navigating the tricky space of confidentiality. Young people often share things that are worrying—self-harm, substance use, or struggles with food—and while we always respect their privacy, we also know that healing doesn’t happen in isolation. Secrecy simply doesn’t work. The sooner parents understand what’s going on, the sooner real support can begin.

That’s why we believe parents aren’t just part of the process—they’re essential to it. When moms and dads are brought into the conversation early, treatment moves faster, feels safer, and leads to better outcomes for everyone involved.

Many people wonder how to tell the difference between feeling down and actually experiencing depression. MedPsych therapist Caitlin Wargo helps clients understand that depression often a combination of symptoms that impact daily life. These can include changes in sleep, appetite, energy, concentration, mood, and even thoughts of self-worth or hopelessness. When multiple symptoms persist, it may point toward clinical depression rather than just a “rough patch.”

Depression is often treatable, and with the right care, many people see real improvement in how they feel and function. If you or someone you love is noticing these patterns, our team is here to help.

Before jumping to medications or advanced treatments, it’s helpful to pause and check in with your body. MedPsych therapist Caitlin Wargo calls this a basic needs check—a quick moment to ask yourself if you’ve slept enough, eaten enough, and moved your body today. These simple habits may sound basic, but they play a huge role in how we feel. A good night’s sleep supports emotional balance, stable meals keep blood sugar steady, and movement—even something as simple as stretching or taking a walk—can lift your mood and give your mind clarity.

What we eat plays a major role in how we feel and function every day. Nutritionist Caitlyn Guirgis with MedPsych shares essential nutrients to boost mental health, mood, and focus. For instance: protein contains essential amino acids key for neurotransmitter production. Healthy fats help reduce inflammation and improve memory and brain function. Antioxidants protect the brain and support focus.

Nutrition and mental health go hand in hand, and with a few mindful choices at the grocery store, you can fuel your brain for clarity, focus, and balance. If you are interested in a nutrition consultation with Caitlin please contact us.

At our MedPsych ADHD Center we see families from across New Jersey who are concerned their child might have ADHD. Our evaluations often reveal that a child who is thought to have ADHD actually does not. Sometimes the underlying issue is immaturity, a language or learning challenge, anxiety, mood concerns, or even a poor fit with their school environment. Without a careful evaluation, it’s easy for kids to be mislabeled and put on a treatment plan that doesn’t address the real problem.

Our mission is to ensure kids get the clear diagnosis and support they need. If you’re wondering whether your child’s struggles are really ADHD or something else, we’re here to help.

Is ADHD being overdiagnosed in kids? Are ADHD medications overprescribed? Yes and yes. At our ADHD Diagnostic Center, we evaluate countless children and teenagers every year—and what we see is clear. Too many kids are being labeled with ADHD when there’s something else going on, whether it’s anxiety, learning differences, or other behavioral and emotional challenges. Even when ADHD is the right diagnosis, there’s often a rush to start medication before exploring other approaches.

Medication can be an important tool, but it’s not the only one. At MedPsych, we focus on thorough evaluations, personalized care plans, and a range of treatment options to help kids succeed in school and life. That might include therapy, skill-building, parent guidance, and lifestyle adjustments—sometimes without a prescription at all. Dr. Hanna recommends slowing down, looking at the full picture, and making sure we address the root cause of the problem.

Summer break can be both fun and challenging for many families. For kids who struggle with anxiety, attention, or behavior, the lack of routine can be tough. We often hear from parents who can’t wait for school to start again—not because they don’t enjoy their kids, but because the structure of the school year helps everyone feel more grounded and balanced. For some children, daily schedule is key to their well-being.

As summer winds down, think about ways to add a bit of routine into your child’s day, even before school starts. Consistent meal times, designated quiet or reading time, and predictable bedtime routines can help reduce stress for both kids and parents. Structure doesn’t have to mean rigidity—it’s simply a framework that can make transitions smoother and your days a lot easier.

Is your child struggling with focus, behavior, or emotions? This time in the summer can often be the best time to get your child evaluated—before the school year begins. Many families wait until school is already underway, but early evaluations help us understand what’s going on and give your child the support they need to start on their best footing. Feeling anxious and need a quick way to calm your mind? Caitlin Wargo shares one of her favorite tools: square breathing. It’s simple, discreet, and can be done anywhere—whether you’re at home, at work, or even stuck in traffic. Just find a square shape around you, breathe in for four counts, hold for four, exhale for four, and hold again for four. Repeat a few times and feel the tension start to melt away. Square breathing is a perfect example of how you can gently guide your mind back to the present and find your calm.
