Ghana! It’s been a few weeks since we returned from Accra. The week flew by, and there were a lot of amazing experiences, friendly people, and opportunities to make a difference. From the moment we arrived we were busy. We spent a good deal of time at Korle Bu Teaching hospital, the main facility in Accra. 2000 beds, a never ending influx of patients, and limited supplies and resources to care for those in need. Our host, Dr. Teddy Totimeh, and his team perform miracles daily, and we were honored to help out. They handle pathologies we don’t see in the US, and stretch limited resources beyond the max to care for those who can’t afford it. We also spent time at Accra Medical Centre, an advanced private hospital performing endoscopic surgeries. Dr. Ryan Osborne, my close friend and ENT surgeon, organized this mission and handled large facial tumors and pediatric otolaryngology problems daily, built playgrounds and playing fields for a local orphanage, and delivered instruments and medical devices that will be used for years to come.

Greetings from across the Atlantic! We stopped in London on our way to Zurich for the ISMISS meeting. It was a great reconnecting with surgeons and friends from all over the world. This was the 40th anniversary meeting, held in its city of origin. After presentations, moderating a session, and a board meeting, I am now off to Accra, Ghana for a medical mission focused on ENT/otolaryngology and neurosurgery. We are joining Dr. Ryan Osborne and his team. More to come!

Our special forces operators are like elite athletes and deserve the highest level of care. Our work with .us allows to participate in the care of those individuals who serve our country. Through the RTD organization, we are able to serve the military with the private sector.

In this case below myself and operated on special forces operator and completed a multi-level lumbar disc replacement. The surgery took under 2 hrs and the patient was discharged home next day. He anticipates being able to “return to duty” within another month without restriction.

Coming back from vacation with a lineup of 5 cases with cervical disc replacements (mix of single and multilevel). Patients suffering from disc compression on spinal nerve(s) and/or cord compression without joint arthritis are typical candidates for this procedure. On average each level takes approximately 30-40 minutes to complete. Most of these procedures are now performed in the outpatient setting and patients are able to go home the same day. Over the next couple of weeks will be healing as the disc is integrated into the bone all while maintaining range of motion, no brace and ability to ambulate. After that they can start PT if necessary but will resume activities unrestricted after that. Check out our latest blog on the website for more info!

Back in the OR today doing some cervical disc replacements. As you can see the implants themselves are quite small. The first implant is a cage for fusion and the second one is an artificial disc. The approach for both cases is similar and the most important part is the decompression - removing the disc/bone/ligament that are compressing the spinal cord/nerve(s). The obvious benefit of the artificial disc is you maintain mobility and get a faster recovery/return to normal activities.

I want to feature our PA, Khatereh, who has been working with us for several years now! Khatereh brings a wealth of knowledge and experience after working in Neurosurgery for many years, but as an added bonus, is also a chiropractor! This level of cross training, helps our patients get an effective assessment and she is able to manage our patients’ care peri-operatively. We are glad to have you on the team and the patients absolutely love working with you.

Great day in the OR yesterday with a special visit from our colleague .physio from . We had a line up with 3 cervical spine operations including: 2 level disc replacement, a disc replacement + adjacent level fusion, and a disc replacement + posterior foraminotomies.

It’s a good demonstration of various approaches that can be employed to ensure a thorough decompression and treating patient symptoms.

Working with a core group of individuals is critical to the growth (and change) in a practice. In the two photos there are certain individuals of our core team that are missing due to being at a different site, but I am always grateful for the support of the team and what each member brings to the table.

Had a great weekend last week visiting New York City with the family. We had a chance to catch a couple of Broadway shows (“Othello,” and “Good Night, and Good Luck”), stroll around the city, have a dinner at a nice Korean restaurant (Jungsik) and, of course, get in a Yankee game (they won!).

It is critical to have quality time with family and friends and I had a wonderful time especially spending time with the kids.

Now it’s back to call week with 16 surgeries (this week), already, and counting. Let’s see how the rest of the weekend goes.
