There's rain in the forecast and might feel like a welcome change from the hot days we've had this week. How do the big swings in weather affect your body?
1. Cold weather causes muscles to lose more heat and contract, causing tightness throughout the body. Joints get tighter, muscles can lose their range of motion and nerves can more easily be pinched.
2. The lower air pressure that comes with a storm can cause the soft tissue around your joints to expand in response and it infringes on the joints, which can cause pain that radiates into the muscles.
You might wake up unaware that your body isn't as loose. So do a check before you get out of bed every morning with some gentle stretching. If you notice you are tighter than usual, allow some extra time to get your body ready for the day. Spend more time in the shower heating up the muscles, walk around the house a bit to warm up your joints and muscles, and take a few minutes to stretch.
Hopefully this will keep you and your body happy as the seasons change.
