The eyes (Human Anatomy)

*Iris: the colored part
*Cornea: a clear dome over the iris
*Pupil: the black circular opening in the iris that lets light in
*Sclera: the white of your eye
*Conjunctiva: a thin layer of tissue that covers the entire front of your eye, except for the cornea

Just behind the iris and pupil lies the lens, which helps focus light on the back of your eye. Most of the eye is filled with a clear gel called the vitreous. Light projects through your pupil and lens to the back of the eye. The inside lining of the eye is covered by special light-sensing cells that are collectively called the retina. It converts light into electrical impulses. Behind the eye, your optic nerve carries these impulses to the brain. The macula is a small extra-sensitive area in the retina that gives you central vision.

1.Eyes are thought to have first developed in animals, in a very basic form, around 550 million years ago.

2.The world’s most common eye colour is brown.

3.Your eye is the fastest muscle in your body – hence why when something happens quickly, we say ‘in the blink of an eye!’

4.You see with your brain, not your eyes. Our eyes function like a camera, capturing light and sending data back to the brain.

5.Dogs can’t distinguish between red and green. Tweet this.

6.We have two eyeballs in order to give us depth perception – comparing two images allows us to determine how far away an object is from us.

7.Eye colour is determined by the amount of melanin in your iris.

FUN FACTS ABOUT THE EYE
•Your eyes are about 1 inch across and weigh about 0.25 ounce.
•The human eye can differentiate approximately 10 million different colors.
•Our eyes remain the same size throughout life, whereas our nose and ears never stop growing.
•The human eye blinks an average of 4,200,000 times a year. This means if you were given a nickel for every time you blinked you would make $210,000 annually.
•Eyes are made up of over 2 million working parts.
•Each individual eye contains 107 million cells and all are light sensitive
•Your eye is the fastest muscle in your body. Hence, the phrase: “In the blink of an eye.”

Fact 1: The eye is the second most complex organ in our body (after the brain)

It is composed of more than 2 million operational parts which can process 36,000 bits of information every hour!

It involves complex pathways and mechanisms and with the help of several structures like retina, pupils, iris, lens, cornea, ciliary muscles and optic nerves. Proper assembly of these parts helps the eye to function properly and makes our vision perfect [1].

Fact 2: Cornea is the only tissue in the eye that doesn’t need blood

Cornea is essential for vision and the presence of blood vessels would have interfered in this process. So, this is the only living cell in our eye that is not directly connected with blood vessels. It gets oxygen and nutrients from the tear fluid in its outer part and the inside part gets nutrition from aqueous humour (the thick watery substance between the lens and the cornea). Scientists say that the factors which promote the formation of blood vessels are absent in cornea, hence it is devoid of blood vessels [2].

Fact 3: The eye muscles are the strongest in our body

The external muscles of the eye are noticeably large in relation to the small size and weight of the eyeball and when it comes to strength, they are the strongest muscle for the job they do. This is so because; the muscles of the eye constantly move to readjust the position of the eye even when the head is in motion. Apart from that, they also work during sleep as we constantly move our eyes during rapid eye movement sleep (REM). In this way, the eye muscles work restlessly. However, the muscles of the eye are subjected to fatigue as well. This is the reason why our eye needs rest after working constantly for 1 hour [3].

Fact 4: All of us have a blind spot in our eyes

Light enters the eye by passing through the pupil and hits the retina at the back of the eye. The retina is covered with light-sensing proteins. They send the information to the optic nerve which carries it back into the brain. The problem is, the optic nerve ends in the field of the retina itself. This creates a blind spot. The blind spots in each eye are aligned symmetrically so that most of the time, one eye’s field of vision will compensate for the loss of vision in the other [4].

Fact 5: The eye requires no rest

The eye is the only part of the human body that can function at 100% ability at any moment, day or night, without rest. But you should give rest to the eyelids and the external muscles of your eyes for its better functioning [5].

Fact 6: We blink 25000 times a day

Large number, isn’t it? Blinking has two purposes – to keep the eyes lubricated and to protect the eye from foreign particles. Our eyelashes have short, curved, hair which serve as dust-catchers. The blinking reflex causes them automatically to lower, when exposed to harsh elements [6].

Fact 7: The amount of light entering the eye is constantly controlled

The central opening of your eye is known as the pupil. It changes size depending on the amount of light entering in the eye. The colored area around the pupil is called the iris which controls the size of the pupil. The colour of the iris, whether black, brown, blue or green is actually responsible for imparting the eye colour [7].

Fact 8: The eye heals quickly

When the outer layer of cells on an eyeball are injured, cellular replacement takes place rapidly because the surface of an eyeball contains living cells. These living cells have the ability to reorganize and migrate to the place where the cells are lost [8].

01/31/2017

There are many different parts of the eye that help to create vision. We “see” with our brains; our eyes collect visual information and begin this complex process.
• Light passes through the cornea, the clear, dome-shaped surface that covers the front of the eye. The cornea bends - or refracts - this incoming light.
• The iris, the colored part of the eye, regulates the size of the pupil, the opening that controls the amount of light that enters the eye.
• Behind the pupil is the lens, a clear part of the eye that further focuses light, or an image, onto the retina.
• The retina is a thin, delicate, photosensitive tissue that contains the special “photoreceptor” cells that convert light into electrical signals.
• These electrical signals are processed further, and then travel from the retina of the eye to the brain through the optic nerve, a bundle of about one million nerve fibers.

1.Your Eye Color is based on the Concentration of Melanin

Iris gets its color based on the concentration of the melanin found in the pigment. The stronger the concentration the darker the color appears.

2.Two Different Colored Eyes

Some people are born with two different colored of eyes. This is a beautiful genetic mutation that makes your eyes appear different in colors. It is usually inherited but sometimes ocular injuries such as blood staining may also cause sectorial heterochromia.

3.Dark Black Eyes do not Exist & so Do Blue & Green

Black eyes do not exist. Due to the heavy concentration of the melanin in the iris, dark brown eyes appear intense black. Similarly, green & blue pigments do not exist. It is just the reflection of the light that make light colored eyes appear so.

4.Brown is the most Common Eye Color

Brown eyes happen due to the excess amount of melanin in the iris. Brown is the most common eye color among human beings.

5.Violet Eyes are a Result of Albinism

Albinism is a condition that fails to produce sufficient amount of melanin. People with albinism seem to have violet colored eyes that are actually deep blue.

6.Deficiency of Melanin may lead to Red Eyes

Red is the rarest of the eye color. When the melanin is extremely deficient your eyes appear red.

7.Amber & Hazel Eyes

Amber and hazel eyes appear almost the same but both are different colors. Amber color occurs due to deposition of yellow pigment in the iris whereas hazel is a result of green, brown & blue. The moderate amount of melanin is responsible for hazel hue in human eyes.

8.Contact Lenses can manipulate

Last but not the least, contact lenses can manipulate the color of your eyes. From monochrome to multiple tones, contact lenses help you get the eyes of your dreams. You don’t need to calculate what concentration of melanin you have in your eye pigment when you have colored contacts to hit the target. Get your favorite soft contact lenses for a color transformation & let your eyes do the talking!
