Sangha

संघ - suhng-guh
Association, especially of spiritual practitioners. Sangha is used in many traditions such as yoga and Buddhism to denote the community of people devoted to the spiritual search. It traditionally refers to a community of ordained monks or nuns. In recent, however, the term has expanded to include a broader population of lay practitioners. Thich Nhat Hahn, Vietnamese Buddhist monk and peace activist, has described sangha as a “beloved community.” Whether the sangha is a family or larger community, it includes people who are engaged in serving and bringing joy to one another, and who inspire each other to contribute. Hahn stresses the contribution of every individual to the community, and of the community to the greater world. Yogananda spoke similarly about the importance of a worldwide fellowship; every person contributes to civilization in a spirit of brotherhood. Many people choose to follow the way of Ananda Sangha. In doing so, they take vows not only to the universal spirit and the practice of self-realization, but also to the service of fellow beings. For example, Ananda Sanghis “seek fellowship with other willing to join hands in this loving labor for universal upliftment” and commit to practicing at least one serviceful act per day. The Ananda Sangha also provides people with two options for formal renunciation as Brahmacharis or Sannyasi. Brahmacharis renounce family ties in an inward path of realization. Sannyasi, after starting as Brahmacharis, choose to view all beings as brothers, sisters, fathers, mothers, and friends. The sangha and renunciate orders began with the founding of Ananda Village near Nevada City, California, by Swami Kriyananda. Although the yogic path has primarily been a tradition of solitary spiritual pursuit, the term yoga sangha now refers to a growing community of yoga practitioners especially in the Western world. Individuals are encouraged to be inclusive and practice within a greater community context.

Breathe 🙏🏼❤️ With breath is life. Energy. Within each breath we take in, we release, we are receiving and sending energy. Pause within your day and take 5 minutes alone. Slow down and realize your breath. Feel the origin of it. Are you breathing from your low abdominal region? Your mid back? Chest? Neck? Heart? Visualize the breath coming into creation from within you center core, moving slowly in a spiral all the way up through your spine, warming your heart, expanding your chest and releasing it through your mouth.... let go of any negative feelings or beliefs that have surrounded you today. Take a full inhale, slowly in through your nose. Take an intention in as you progress the breath inward sending it high through your heart and pushing it low enough you can feel it brush softly against your low back (tailbone). See this rhythm of both sending and receiving as your medicine of love, adoration and be pleased with 1 thing you have done today. You are alive. Breathe ❤️🙏🏼

Morning Sangha... you are perfectly created, whole and full just as you are. Connect within. Ignite your soul.

Tips to Incorporate Your Religious Faith into Your Yoga Practice

Meditation

Find a comfortable seated position, or perhaps take a Savasana (Co**se Pose).
• Feel the parts of you that are connected to the earth and the mat beneath you.
• Focus on your breath, and allow yourself to relax.
• Meditate on a belief, a mantra, affirmation, scripture or simply on all the good in your life.

Prayer

Come into Sukhasana (Easy Seated Pose).
• Place your hands at heart center.
• Silently or out loud, pray. Your conscious breathing can be your whispered prayers.

Worship

Practice a gentle moving sequence or Sun Salutation.
• Go through a gentle sequence: Child’s Pose, Table Top, Chaturanga Dandasana, Cobra, and repeat.
• Next, go through Sun Salutation A or B, and simply move as you meditate, pray and/or worship the God of your understanding.

So . . . Can a Christian Practice Yoga?

The popularity of various religious groups practicing yoga creates a concern for some Christ followers. Some Christians think that yoga worships idols or gods that they don’t believe in. Again, how others use yoga is not up for judgment. Rather, as a Christian, what you set your intentions and meditations on while practicing yoga will be entirely different than someone else. In fact, the Bible speaks often about meditation. What are you setting your heart and mind toward at any given moment?

Yoga + Faith

Yoga is nonsectarian – it has the ability to deepen anyone’s faith. For thousands of years, yoga techniques and philosophies have been incorporated into various organizations, including many religious organizations. However, yoga is not a religion in and of itself, nor do you have to be religious to practice yoga. To exclude anyone or any group from the practice of yoga would quite frankly be “unyogic.” Yoga should be an inclusive practice where all are welcome.

Yoga predates many of the religions that have incorporated yoga techniques. In the Middle Ages, numerous variations and practices stemmed from the common Hatha yoga practice. Bhakti yoga is one stem. It focuses on surrendering to God. Unlike other types of yoga, Bhakti is a spiritual journey and a devotion to the divine. Some have used the practice of yoga, meditation and times of stillness to reflect on self-enlightenment, a source they believe in, or as an act of worship. Combining your religious faith with your yoga practice can be a beautiful act of [your] worship.

No matter who or what you believe in, yoga will help you achieve tranquility. It will help you “check in” with yourself to confront or release unresolved issues. Your relationships will even benefit from yoga. Practice daily and you will become whole – mind, body, spirit and soul!

Yoga is simply defined as a union, to unite or to yoke. Not only do we unite our postures with our breath and our practice with our lives, we also create a union with the community and those with whom we practice. Many practitioners choose to unite their faith with their yoga practice, just as you would include your core beliefs into anything you do.

In this case, a yoga practice can become a holistic experience where your life can truly be transformed, peaceful and harmonious, no matter what your belief system is. How a practitioner or a group chooses to use yoga is their business. It certainly is not up to others to judge how or why one practices or uses yoga. Our job as human beings is to honor, respect, and encourage one another.

Because it is a physical activity like no other. The ancient gift of yoga creates a space for holistic wellness; the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual benefits of yoga are all-encompassing. There is truly no other exercise than yoga that is a mind, body and spirit practice.
