Today my family and I participated in the Nebraska Humane Society’s Bark and Rec program! First off, this is an AMAZING program! You get to bust a shelter dog out for day trip, weekend, or even longer to get some much deserved companionship, play, and recreation.
Now for the best part! Meet Lobo!!! Lobo is a 7 year old Husky mix who is as sweet as can be!
Here are some of Lobo’s top qualities
♥️ Lobo loves people, we went for a walk and he was eager to greet anyone who wanted to meet him.
💋 Gives LOtS of kisses
🚶♀️Walks GREAT on a leash
🧠 SMART and Attentive: While walking, he routinely “checked in” with me: I LOVE a dog that does this!!
😎 Very handsome, don’t let his age fool you, he keeps up with the best of them!
For our adventure, myself, my husband, and my twin THREE year olds went to Lake Cunningham and went on a long walk.
Social Skills: Lobo was exposed to a variety of people, passed by multiple dogs, had bikes whizzing by, and twin toddlers on their scooters to deal with.
Lobo tolerated all of this wonderfully, he trusted me, but I could tell it was NOT relaxing for him. All the busyness was giving him some stress and anxiety —I was equally as nervous. It was a LOT to handle and it was a HUGE ask for Lobo to trust me, but he did.
🎶 Lobo showed his husky side and would become vocal if he needed something (i.e. a bathroom break or a drink) or if he was interested in other dogs.
Dogs: I think Lobo would thrive with the RIGHT doggie companion. Lobo showed a lot of positive response to other dogs i.e. walking at my side while passing another dog- not crossing in front of me, not lunging, not barking/growling. Lobo’s attention was on the other dogs, but he was easily redirected.
However, his lack of confidence presents with nervousness: anxious whining and the husky chatter. If a potential adopter had a calm, easy going dog this would be ideal for Lobo. A dominant dog or hyper/anxious dog would only exacerbate Lobo’s insecurity.
Kids: Lobo LOVED my kids, he covered them with kisses and loved their attention. On two separate occasions each of my kids fell and began crying. On both occasions, Lobo leaned into the leash and wanted to get to my kids as soon as possible. He licked my kids to try to help them, but as long as they were crying he was anxious to get them to stop (understandably). His concern is great, but he was SO concerned that infant children or lots of crying/screaming may be overwhelming to Lobo.
🌳 We shifted our walk to a quieter location and this is when I saw Lobo RELAX. He became playful, wanted to roll around, and even took some time to wrestle around with my husband. A lot of dogs can be fearful of men, but not Lobo - honestly I think he preferred to hang with the guys.🤷🏼♀️
If you’ve made it this far—thanks for sticking with me! Lobo is a GREAT dog and will make an excellent companion to someone!
If you can’t adopt please consider participating in the Barks and Rec program!! It was so fun and rewarding 🐾
