As a community doula and childbirth educator, I empower you by encouraging you to be an informed and active participant in your own pregnancy and birth. My experience as a healthcare provider with wisdom in maternal and fetal wellbeing, and my training as a doula offer you a uniquely strong support as you navigate choices and experiences during this time. Pain is the physical feeling caused by disease, injury, or something that hurts/harms the body. With that definition, there is no pain in labor!

Have you ever wondered why your belly is measured at some of your prenatal visits? Do you know what the fundus means? Or fundal height?

The Fundus is referring to the top part of the uterus. When your OB provider measures your belly they are determining what the fundal height is.

The Fundal height is the distance from the p***c bone to the top of the uterus measured in centimeters. After 24 weeks of pregnancy, fundal height often matches the number of weeks you've been pregnant, give or take 1-2 centimeters.

The fundal height is off this could indicate that the baby may not be growing so well in the uterus and further evlauation needs to be done to determine why. This is usually done with an ultrasound.

Towards the end of the pregnancy, some babies will drop into the pelvis cavity in preparation for labor and birth. This is normal but it can sometimes cause your fundal height to be less than how far along you are. Your OB provider knows this and will determine if the measurement is within the range of normal.
