Research shows that depression has a genetic component, but it is not determined by a single gene.

Heritability estimates suggest that approximately 30–40% of depression risk may be genetic.

At Southeastern Psychiatric Associates (SEPA), we believe knowledge reduces fear. Let’s break down what science actually says about genetics, environment, and depression risk.

If you’ve taken medications consistently, at the right dose, for the recommended length of time — and still have significant symptoms — you may meet criteria for treatment-resistant depression. This is not rare. It is not unusual. And it is not a reflection of personal weakness. It is a neurobiological condition.

A question clinicians get asked a lot is "why do some antidepressants work and not others?" This is an excellent question, and the short answer is "we don't know."

We also often get asked "which antidepressant is the most effective?" Interestingly, all of the antidepressants have roughly the same level of efficacy. In other words, if you take 100 random patients and put them on any one of the antidepressants, you will see roughly the same percent of patients h...

TMS may feel new, but it is far from untested. The FDA based its approval on randomized, placebo-controlled trials involving several hundred participants. Universities such as Columbia and the University of Pennsylvania have replicated these results, reporting that roughly 50 % of treatment-resistant patients achieve at least a 50 % reduction in symptoms, and about one-third reach complete remission.

People often arrive with a mix of curiosity and skepticism about TMS treatment for depression Brockton and want clear answers.

TMS stands for Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation. It’s an FDA-approved, non-invasive therapy used to treat depression—especially when medication hasn’t been effective. It works by using magnetic pulses to activate specific areas of the brain involved in mood regulation. There’s no medication involved, no sedation, and no downtime.

Unlike medications, TMS does not circulate through the bloodstream, which means it avoids systemic side effects. Treatment is delivered while the patient is awake and alert, and sessions typically take less than 15 minutes, depending on the protocol used.
