🌱 Rooted in Community. Growing Together.

Celebrate all that connects us at Gifford's FY25 Annual Meeting. This year’s program features a State of Gifford update from CEO Michael Costa, a keynote address from Vermont Treasurer Mike Pieciak, a financial stewardship update, a look at our new TMINI® robotic surgery program, and community scholarship announcements.

Vermont Treasurer Mike Pieciak’s story, rooted in service and shaped right here in Vermont, reminds us what’s possible when we invest in each other. It’s a message that couldn’t be more timely for our community.

Bring a friend. Invite a neighbor. The more who gather, the stronger we all become. RSVP at the link in our comments or email Kbaumann@giffordhealthcare.org.

Last week, we had the honor of celebrating our DAISY, BEE, and HIVE Award winners and we’re so proud to recognize Mary Borie, RN as our DAISY Award recipient 💜

Mary was nominated by Jennifer Celley, who beautifully captured what makes Mary so exceptional:

“Mary exemplifies what the DAISY Award represents. Her depth of clinical knowledge, combined with her calm and reassuring presence, consistently creates a sense of safety during moments of significant vulnerability. During my admission with preeclampsia, I arrived frightened and overwhelmed. Mary’s presence at the bedside immediately brought comfort. She managed a high-risk situation with professionalism and confidence while also providing emotional reassurance, helping me remain calm during an otherwise frightening experience.

Throughout my care in the birthing center, my husband and I felt an unwavering sense of trust whenever Mary was involved. We often expressed how grateful we were to see her on shift, knowing that her presence meant both exceptional care and genuine compassion. She has a rare ability to make patients feel seen, heard, and supported while delivering excellent clinical care.

Nursing is demanding and often emotionally taxing work, yet Mary consistently goes above and beyond for her patients. The impact of her care has been lasting and deeply meaningful. The compassion and empathy she showed during some of the most pivotal moments of my life will stay with me forever. Every time I look at my children, I am reminded of the role she played during their arrival and the kindness she extended throughout my care.”

Congratulations, Mary, and thank you for the incredible care and compassion you bring to our patients and community every day 🌼

Stay tuned as we celebrate each of our outstanding winners over the next week!

🌿 A quick check now can save you trouble later.

After time outside, a quick tick check can make a big difference for you, your kids, and your pets. Ticks are tiny this time of year and easy to miss, but finding them early is key.

“In general, for a tick to transmit, it has to be lodged on your body for 48 hours, potentially 72 hours,” says Gifford Chief Medical Officer Dr. Joshua White. That’s why checking as soon as you come inside is so important.

Also keep in mind: symptoms of tick-borne illness aren’t always obvious. While some people look for a bull’s-eye rash, many never see one, so pay attention to things like an unexplained fever that doesn’t go away.

Stay aware, stay protected, and enjoy the outdoors. 🌞

At Gifford, one family’s love has created a lasting and meaningful experience for others. 💛

For the Frey family of Montpelier, Hadleigh’s Library began as a way to honor their daughter, who passed away just days after her birth. When her first birthday approached in April 2022, Jamie and Andrew created a library in Gifford’s Birthing Center, bringing with them 150 books donated by friends and family through an Amazon wish list.

Today, that loving tribute continues to offer comfort, connection, and a special gift for families welcoming new babies. 📚✨

Jamie and Andrew Frey recently shared this reflection after visiting Hadleigh’s Library: “This weekend we stopped by Hadleigh’s Library with books to restock the shelf. While we were there, the nurses shared with us about how it has become such a meaningful part of the experience for families who give birth at Gifford. It brought us so much joy to hear that our gift to Hadleigh has been a gift to so many families.”

If you’d like to be part of supporting Hadleigh’s Library, you can find the Amazon wish list in the comments 💫Thank you for helping share the love!

👋 Meet Team Gifford!

Say hello to Rev. Tim Eberhardt! Tim serves as our Spiritual Care Coordinator, supporting patients, families, and staff through compassionate presence and care. He also oversees Gifford’s Volunteer Chaplaincy Program, a non-sectarian initiative that began in 2000. Since taking on leadership of the program in 2010, Tim has helped it grow into a remarkable team of 22 trained volunteer chaplains who provide daily support at Gifford and Menig Nursing Home.

Through training chaplains, coordinating visits, and supporting memorial, bereavement, and grief services, Tim lives out the mission that “each of us as a chaplain is committed to responding to the emotional and spiritual journeys of an amazing range of staff, patients and families who are facing the greatest trials and challenges of what it means to be human from birth to death in the hospital setting.” His work has helped shape a program admired across Vermont and beyond.

Outside of Gifford, Tim enjoys life with his spouse, Mary Ellen. An avid bicyclist since completing a cross-country ride in 1988, he still participates in the Last Mile Ride. He also enjoys walking, reading, and following the Bruins and Red Sox.

Tim says it best: “we end up getting back more than we ever give.” Thank you, Tim, for your decades of service and for the compassion you bring to our community every day.

We’re excited to share a special announcement for Gifford’s FY25 Annual Meeting!

Join us on April 30 from 5:30–7:30 PM at the Chandler Center for the Arts as we welcome keynote speaker Vermont State Treasurer Mike Pieciak.

Mike will share reflections on how Vermont values come to life through the issues that shape our everyday lives—housing, workforce, and healthcare—and the role resilience plays in supporting strong, connected communities.

A proud Vermonter, Mike grew up in Brattleboro and now serves as the state’s 31st Treasurer, where he focuses on strengthening Vermont’s economy and expanding opportunity. He previously served as Commissioner of the Department of Financial Regulation and was part of the state’s COVID-19 pandemic response team.

In addition to the keynote, the evening will include a State of Gifford address from CEO Michael Costa, a financial stewardship update, a technology spotlight featuring Gifford’s new TMINI® robotic surgery program, and community scholarship announcements.

Light refreshments will be served.

This is a wonderful event to attend and to invite a friend, neighbor, or colleague to join you. The more of our community that gathers around this table, the better.

📅 Please RSVP by April 17 at the link in our comments or email kbaumann@giffordhealthcare.org. We hope to see you there!
