💜 November is Caregivers Awareness Month and Alzheimer’s Awareness Month.

Across our state, caregivers provide over 20 million hours of unpaid care each year, often sacrificing their own financial stability, mental health, and physical well-being to support their loved ones.

This year, the Alzheimer’s Association Vermont Chapter is advocating to increase Vermont’s Dementia Respite Grant from $250,000 to $750,000. These vital funds help family caregivers access respite care, giving them much-needed relief and support.

Last week, longtime Last Mile Ride supporter Tim Schroeder delivered a generous donation of more than $3,000 to Gifford, raised through sponsorships from his incredible cross-country motorcycle journey.

Tim’s 9,570-mile ride, supported by 35 sponsors, will directly benefit Gifford’s Last Mile Fund, which provides compassionate support to patients and families during end-of-life care.

Tim’s dedication to the Last Mile cause began years ago after his friend and neighbor, Janelle Fresolo-Renner, spent her final days in Gifford’s Garden Room. This year’s month-long ride, organized by former Vermont Sen. Joe Benning, took Tim and his fellow riders through breathtaking landscapes and meaningful stops across the country, all in the spirit of connection and giving back.

From all of us at Gifford, thank you, Tim, for your incredible commitment, generosity, and compassion. Your journey truly embodies the spirit of the Last Mile. 🧡

As Open Enrollment begins, we’re standing together for our communities’ health. Gifford joined Senator Peter Welch, local farmers, patients, and health care leaders at Central Vermont Medical Center on Friday in Berlin to discuss the challenges families face this season.

The potential expiration of enhanced ACA tax credits could affect nearly 27,000 Vermonters, causing health insurance premiums to rise sharply and putting added strain on working families in Central Vermont and beyond.

The message is clear: access to affordable care is essential for the health and stability of our communities. Together, we’re committed to protecting that access for all Vermonters.

We’re so proud to have Brad Salzmann, PA-C, on the Gifford team. 👏

Brad brings not only exceptional skill to our Orthopedics department, but also decades of experience in emergency medical care and disaster response, from volunteer deployments in Haiti and New Orleans to leading emergency planning in Royalton, VT.

🎉 Congratulations to our incredible Gifford award winners! This week, we celebrated our semiannual DAISY, BEE, and HIVE Awards, honoring four amazing team members who go above and beyond to care for our patients, families, and community.

We also reached a record 65 nominations, our highest ever! Each one, submitted by patients, families, and staff, is a beautiful reminder of the compassion and dedication that make Gifford so special.

Meet Team Gifford! It’s time to shine a spotlight on one of our long-standing team members, Podiatrist Dr. Nick Benoit, who has been a valued member of Gifford’s Podiatry team for an incredible 18 years!

Dr. Benoit has contributed to Gifford in countless ways over the years. His roles have included Treasurer and Vice President of the medical staff, and membership on several committees such as EMR selection, bylaws, peer review, quality, and medical executive. He’s also served as Medical Director of the Surgical Division and currently serves as Clinical Coordinator of the Surgical Division.

When asked what he loves about Gifford, Dr. Benoit said it best:

“What is there not to love? We have a beautiful location in Central Vermont, with a caring and dedicated staff that provides the highest level of care with the feel of a small, community-oriented hospital. We’re here to help take care of our friends and neighbors.”

Outside of work, Dr. Benoit enjoys all that Vermont has to offer with his family, whether it’s coaching local sports, skiing, mountain biking, fishing, spending time at their camp on Lake Champlain, or relaxing at home with their dogs.

Thank you, Dr. Benoit, for your dedication, humor, and all you do for our patients and community. We’re lucky to have you on the Gifford team!
