I haven’t posted in some time due to beekeeping burnout. Turns out that it is completely possible to take a wonderful hobby and grow it into a monster that consumes every ounce of energy and time that you have. That’s my fault, not the bees. Going forward, I will be scaling back the size of my operation to a hobby level once again so as to make it more manageable for my situation. That will mean a big decrease in honey production and nuc sales. It also means that I will be able to do beekeeping simply for the love of the bees and the art of beekeeping. I look forward to this transition! I will still have a few nucs and hives to sale occasionally. I will still continue to help beginner beekeepers as I can and we will still have our annual Spring beekeeping seminar for the foreseeable future. Here’s looking to a productive and enjoyable season!

I came across this old picture of our first sign that we made when we were starting out beekeeping. Do you see the pig trail to the left? That trail led to the home of Levi Hostetler. Levi was my beekeeping mentor. He ran around 300 hives and was unbelievably skilled at the craft. His mentorship put me far ahead of where I would have been on my own. What’s more is that he literally gave me three large hives to get started with! We were as close as brothers and I miss his fellowship greatly! But, he now resides in Missouri and I’m still on the farm. For now I’ll look at this picture and reminisce of the time I could walk down the trail and visit with the best friend and beekeeper I’ve ever had the privilege to know.

We overwintered several Fall nucs this season. They performed very well. As you can see, they’re expanding nicely and had to be transferred out of their nuc box into a larger 10 frame deep box.

“Daddy, I’ve got a sore throat and we don’t have any medicine!” Well, that’s what home remedies are for! Our own pure raw honey combined with locally grown organic garlic, then fermented and aged for more than three years. She’ll be well in no time flat!
