3 things you should know about cervical exams.⁠
⁠
1. Cervical exams are optional, even though they are often not presented that way. As with many things when it comes to OB, women are often told what is going to happen instead of presenting the information and obtaining consent. ⁠
⁠
2. Cervical exams come with risks. One of the risks is infection which can cause a fever which can lead to a higher heart rate in baby. Sign of a good provider is one that limits cervical exams especially after your water breaks as your risk of infection increases. Another risk of a cervical exam is it could break your water. If it's pushing against the cervix, the provider might accidentally break it. ⁠

3. Cervical exams cannot predict labor, it’s not a magic 8 ball. Not knowing this can really mess with the mom’s head when it comes to when she will go into labor. Your cervix can be hard with zero % dilation and you still can go into labor that same day, or your cervix can be soft at 2cm dilated and it can still take up to 2 weeks for labor to begin. ⁠

How do you know if your baby is getting enough? They seem calm and relaxed during feeds. Your baby comes off the breast on their own at the end. Their mouth looks moist after feeds. Your baby appears content and satisfied. Fists no longer clenched.⁠

Crafting Birth has moved! Still located in the Fairmont Creamery building on 2nd and Main but in a much larger location on the first floor! Along with finding a new and better home for the Apothecary (where you can find all your herbal maternity products) I wanted more space to hold doula consultations and have a permanent and easy to access spot for the maternity lending library. ⁠

I'm back, well I really never left. Just took a long social media break in terms of the doula side of my business. I have maintained clients but outside of that my focus was on the Apothecary and not only moving it to a larger location but also website updates and workshops. ⁠

Today is World Maternal Mental Health Awareness day.

In honor of this week and in service, we are happy to announce that the BH Birth Collective will be starting a postpartum group on May 31st at 7pm. This weekly group is free to attend in which all parents are welcome. Please follow here and on FB for more details.
