Meet Kati Goins, she is a full spectrum birth and postpartum doula serving the Black Hills and surrounding areas. Kati is a mom of five kiddos aged 9 and under and enjoys spending time with her family and on her farm tending to her goats and chickens. Kati relocated to the Black Hills area in March of 2021 and is very excited to continue to get to know the area and the wonderful people. She trained with DONA and then trained and certified with the BEST doula program. She is also the co-founder of the Black Hills Birth Collective.
While she does both birth and postpartum work, birthing work is her most favorite and she takes her commitment to her clients and mothers very seriously. Kati has almost 20 births under her belt so she has both the personal and professional experience you might be looking for.

Having the birth that you have always dreamed of starts with a solid plan. Now, birth plans are controversial in the birthing world, but let me tell you why I encourage everyone to build one.

There are many reasons a birth plan is a great idea but lets start with just a few...

🌟Increased closeness with your partner

🌟Better understanding between you and your provider

🌟No huge decisions to make when you are in labor and giving birth

Pain can affect us in many ways. Birthing is HARD, painful and beautiful. As your doula I help you craft your birth plan so that when it comes time to meet your baby, you can enjoy the experience and remain confident that your wishes will be respected.

Now booking through 2022! Let’s chat about your birthing needs today!

Oftentimes moms do not fully realize how quickly the effects from interventions will affect their baby, themselves or the way they choose to birth. Interventions often are made unnecessarily to speed up or augment labor. Let me tell you mama, your body was made to birth! While having these interventions available to us, it is best to always evaluate the risk vs. reward when opting for any interventions to augment labor. Your doula can help to work with you and your provider to make sure that you understand these interventions and make sure you are comfortable with what you want for YOUR birth.

You have choices, mama!

Just because something is “routine” or “protocol” does not mean it’s mandatory. You alone hold the power over your choices when it comes to your pregnancy and birth, and you are allowed to say no to things you don’t want.

Do your research.
Find a care provider you trust and talk to them.
Trust your instinct.

Note: this is not me saying you SHOULD opt out of these things, this is me saying you CAN. My hope is that whatever decisions you make you do it out of fully informed consent and what feels right to YOU - no matter what kind of birth you choose!”

Wow!! Imagine a hospital where vertical birth was not only practiced.... but preferred! The hospital in Otavalo, Ecuador has a 90% vaginal birth rate (vaginal!), of which approximately 75% are born vertically! The other 15% are birthed in a clinical room similar to North American standards. This means that only 10% of births are cesarean, which is 5% below the national Ecuadorian average of 15% cesarean births. Oh, and if THAT didn’t blow your doula mind... they are an intercultural institution where the Indigenous midwife (partera) has her own prenatal room, that resembles the inside of a home - with a fire place, beds, stove, and more! For over 20 years this hospital has been promoting these relationships and practices. The community feels supported, listened to, and connected through option and shared respect for their diversity.

"I'm going to check you"
"I'm just going to break your water"
"We're going to start an IV antibiotic"
"You really need to do this right now"
“You’re not allowed to (walk around, eat, fill in the blank…)"

None of these are examples of informed consent.
Informed consent is a legal, human, and ethical right - established by law.

It’s a discussion that includes:
1️⃣ risks (including future potential risks, i.e. repeat cesareans, post-episiotomy pain, impacting s*x life)
2️⃣ benefits
3️⃣ alternatives

Informed consent also includes the right to INFORMED REFUSAL.

That means you have a legal right to say NO at your birth to anything you believe is not in your and baby's best interest.

Your voice counts and what you say matters.

Being guilted into something or otherwise psychologically pressured is a violation of informed consent.

But violations are common and accepted. It’s common for a practitioner to say something like: ‘a good mom would do this’ and ‘you wouldn’t want to harm your baby’ or “I know this is what you want, but my job is to look out for your baby.” Legally YOU are the one who gets to choose for you and baby and LEGALLY that should be without repercussions to you regardless of outcome. YOU get to make the risk-benefit analysis, but that means getting educated ahead of time. And that’s what I’m here to help you do.

If you want to learn what your birth rights are, the difference between birth rights and hospital policy, and more on how to be your own advocate, I invite you to join my FREE pregnancy, birth, and postpartum course via the link in bio.

Once you join, you'll have access to the previously recorded videos (including the one on advocacy), in addition to supplemental PDFs and guided videos - and all of the ongoing classes coming up, plus the ongoing weekly support group.
