Racers and Participants,

Thank you for joining us for our 2nd Annual Monster Dash for Sobriety Fun Glow Run/Walk! We are excited to have you all, regardless of your age or running experience, join us on October 24th, 2025, for a fun evening of events. This event is not just about raising awareness, but also about having a great time with your friends and family. The purpose of this event is to bring awareness towards substance use disorders and the devastating effects substance use has on individuals and families within our communities. We hope that anyone struggling finds the courage to reach out and ask for help and know they do not have to do it alone. Please take note that this event is free. However, we are accepting free-will donations, which will go towards providing food for clients.

We look forward to seeing you all there! Please see below for more information on some of the events.

Registration begins at 5 PM at the north shelter at Centennial Park. If you pre-registered with us online, thank you! However, you still need to stop by the registration table to sign your waiver and collect your swag bag. During Registration, the National Guard is hosting fun activities for families, including laser tag, corn hole, and pedal carts. So come, register, and stay for the fun while you wait for your race!

This is the first event for the littles, roughly ages 0-4ish, starting at 5:30. This event will be a short run (50 meters) towards a bunch of candy at the finish line.

The monster miler is a 1-mile run starting at 6:00 PM at the American Legion and runs down Garden Street towards the bridge at Brookside Apartments. Once at the bridge, you cross, then run down Freedom Trail to the dip bridge, turn around, then run back on Freedom Trail to Centennial and finish through the Halloween chute!

The 5k Glow Run starts at 6:30 PM at the American Legion and takes some of the same path as the monster miler. However, rather than heading south down Freedom Trail, the path takes you on a left turn heading north, back towards Centennial. You will run past Centennial and head out towards Chautauqua Park. This route has many details, and a briefing will be given at the race. Be advised that this route runs on streets, sidewalks, and trails. Please remember to bring your flashlight!

Lastly, we have many finisher prizes, and remember to wear your costume, as we are giving out awards for the best costumes!!

Sincerely,

Your friends at ARCBH

One of the most transformative actions in recovery is turning the focus outward. Today, let's talk about the healing power of

In active addiction, life often becomes focused entirely on self. Volunteering is a vital tool for shifting that perspective and building a fulfilling, sober life.

When you focus your energy on helping others, your own problems often feel less overwhelming. It breaks the cycle of introspection and self-pity that can fuel relapse thinking.

Addiction strips away identity and meaning. Volunteering helps you rediscover your skills and passion, creating a new, positive sense of purpose that is incompatible with substance use.

It introduces you to new people who share positive values and are engaged in healthy activities. This helps you build sober connections outside of traditional recovery settings.

Serving othersโ€”especially those less fortunateโ€”is a powerful reminder of how far you've come. It shifts your focus from what you lack to what you can contribute, grounding you in gratitude.

Ready to put your hands and heart to work? Find a cause you care about and start servingโ€”it's a commitment to your own recovery.

The recovery journey is often about managing triggers, but sometimes the trigger is something we can't avoid: ๐ˆ๐ฅ๐ฅ๐ง๐ž๐ฌ๐ฌ.

Getting sickโ€”whether it's a severe cold, the flu, or chronic painโ€”can significantly challenge your sobriety. Here's why illness is a major relapse risk and how you can prepare:

Illness often brings feelings of self-pity, irritability, anxiety, and discouragement. These intense negative emotions can be powerful drivers back to old coping mechanisms.

Pain, fever, and exhaustion wear down your mental defenses and reduce your capacity for rational thinking (the "Clear Mind").

Over-the-counter or prescription medications, even those not considered addictive, can alter your mental state or create ambiguity around abstinence, potentially lowering your guard.

- ๐‚๐จ๐ง๐ฌ๐ฎ๐ฅ๐ญ ๐˜๐จ๐ฎ๐ซ ๐ƒ๐จ๐œ๐ญ๐จ๐ซ (๐š๐ง๐ ๐’๐ฉ๐จ๐ง๐ฌ๐จ๐ซ): Discuss your recovery status with your medical provider. Be upfront about your addiction history so they can prescribe non-addictive, non-mood-altering pain or symptom relief.

Increase communication with your sponsor, therapist, or support network. Let them know you're struggling physically so they can check in on you.

While you need to rest, don't completely isolate. Use technology (calls, video chats) to stay connected and avoid letting your thoughts spiral.

Do not beat yourself up for feeling irritable or discouraged while sick. Accept the discomfort (like practicing "mooring lines") and remind yourself that this temporary illness will pass.

Prepare for illness when you are well, and when it strikes, treat your recovery like the most important prescription you have.

Substance use doesn't happen in a vacuumโ€”it has a profound impact on our relationships. Whether it's with family, friends, or a partner, addiction can change the way we connect and communicate.

๐…๐š๐ฆ๐ข๐ฅ๐ข๐ž๐ฌ:
Families are often the first to feel the effects of substance use. Addiction can introduce chaos, distrust, and emotional distance. Roles within the family may shift, with members taking on the burden of enabling or covering up for the person using. Recovery is a journey for the whole family, requiring open communication and a willingness to heal together.

In romantic relationships, substance use can erode trust and intimacy. It can lead to codependency, where one person's well-being becomes dependent on the other's actions, or to cycles of conflict and emotional abuse. Recovery for a couple involves rebuilding trust, establishing healthy boundaries, and rediscovering a partnership free from the influence of substances.

Friendships can be strained as priorities change. You might gravitate toward friends who enable your use or distance yourself from those who are worried about you. Some friendships may not survive the journey of recovery, while others may become stronger than ever. The key is to surround yourself with people who support your sobriety and celebrate your new, healthy lifestyle.

In recovery, learning to communicate honestly and transparently is crucial for repairing these relationships. It's about taking responsibility, setting healthy boundaries, and being open to the healing processโ€”both for yourself and for those you love.

What is one way your relationships have changed for the better in your recovery journey?
