🔴💧 Why Is the Water Red or Green During a Septic Inspection?

You may see red or green water during a septic system inspection. That color comes from a safe dye used by the Portage County Health District to check plumbing connections.

A septic tank is a large underground tank that holds household waste water from sinks, tubs, toilets, laundry lines, and utility sinks. During an inspection, we may add dye to a laundry line or utility sink and run water through the pipe to make sure it flows into the septic tank as it should.

✔️ If the dye appears in the septic system, the pipe is connected correctly.
❌ If dye shows up on the ground, in a ditch, or near water, a repair may be needed.

Laundry lines and utility sinks sometimes are not properly connected. Even gray water from washing machines contains soap and germs and must flow into the septic system in homes that use septic tanks.

The dye is safe, will fade over time, and does not harm people, pets, or plumbing. The test does not fix pipes, it helps identify issues early so they can be addressed.

When waste water goes where it should, it helps protect our water, land, and environment.

Clean water starts with you.

Supporting the Smallest Lives in Northeast Ohio 🍼

The Portage County Health District proudly serves as a milk drop off site for the Mothers’ Milk Bank of Ohio, helping make it easier for families in our region to donate breast milk to infants in need.

In 2025 alone, 11,392 ounces of donated breast milk were collected at our location and shipped to the Mothers’ Milk Bank in Columbus for processing and distribution.

Did you know? Just one ounce of donated milk can feed three premature infants for a day. Every donation truly makes a difference.

Big games bring big celebrations, but they can also bring big risks on our roads. Alcohol impaired driving increases during major events like the Super Bowl, and the consequences can be devastating.

This message from Portage County Safe Communities and our local law enforcement partners is simple and powerful:

𝐅𝐚𝐧𝐬 𝐃𝐨𝐧’𝐭 𝐋𝐞𝐭 𝐅𝐚𝐧𝐬 𝐃𝐫𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐃𝐫𝐮𝐧𝐤.

✔️ Make a plan before kickoff
✔️ Step in if a friend should not be driving
✔️ Choose safety every time

Winning the night means everyone gets home safely. Let’s look out for one another and keep Portage County roads safe this Super Bowl Sunday.

Thank you Kent State Police Department!

02/08/2026

Every year, thousands of lives are lost due to alcohol impaired driving in the United States. Super Bowl celebrations are one of the times when impaired driving crashes historically increase.

In 2023 alone, 12,429 people lost their lives in crashes involving drunk drivers.

That is why Portage County Safe Communities, in partnership with our local law enforcement agencies, is sharing this critical reminder:

🏈 Fans Don’t Let Fans Drive Drunk.

Before you head to or host a game day gathering:

✔️ Plan a sober ride home. Use a designated driver, ride share, taxi, or public transportation
✔️ If you see someone about to drink and drive, step in and help them choose a safe option
✔️ Hosts can support safety by offering non alcoholic beverages and encouraging designated drivers

No celebration is worth a life. Let’s work together to keep our friends, families, and neighbors safe this Super Bowl Sunday.

🚓💙 Fans Don’t Let Fans Drive Drunk.

Thank you Streetsboro Police Department for creating this video.
