April 8 – Autism Awareness Month 💙

Today’s Topic: Your Advocacy Matters

Advocacy plays an important role in supporting individuals with autism. Speaking up, sharing knowledge, and helping others understand autism can create more inclusive and supportive environments for everyone.

Advocacy can happen in many ways—educating others, promoting acceptance, supporting families, encouraging inclusive opportunities, and helping ensure individuals with autism have access to the services and supports they need.

Every voice makes a difference. Whether you are a parent, therapist, teacher, or community member, your willingness to advocate helps increase awareness and understanding.

At Expressions Behavioral Healthcare, we believe that advocacy helps open doors, build acceptance, and create opportunities for the individuals and families we serve.

💙 Discussion Question:
What is one way you can advocate for individuals with autism in your community?

April 7 – Autism Awareness Month 💙

Today’s Topic: Signs Are Often Subtle

Early signs of autism are not always obvious. Sometimes they appear as small differences in communication, play, social interaction, or responses to the environment. These signs can be easy to overlook or may simply seem like personality differences at first.

Examples of subtle signs may include limited eye contact, delayed speech, reduced response to name, repetitive behaviors, intense interests, or differences in social play. Every child is different, and signs may appear in a variety of ways.

Recognizing these early differences allows families and professionals to seek support, evaluation, and early intervention when needed, which can make a meaningful difference in a child’s development.

At Expressions Behavioral Healthcare, we believe awareness and understanding help ensure children receive the support they need to grow, learn, and thrive.

💙 Discussion Question:
Why do you think recognizing early signs can be important for children and their families?

April 6 – Autism Awareness Month 💙

Today’s Topic: Connection Before Correction

Before learning can happen, children need to feel safe, understood, and connected. Building strong relationships with the children we support helps create trust and a positive learning environment.

When we focus on connection first—through play, shared interests, encouragement, and positive interactions—children are more likely to engage, respond to guidance, and feel confident trying new things.

Correction and teaching are important, but they are most effective when they come from a place of trust and rapport. Taking time to connect shows children that we are there to support them, not just redirect them.

At Expressions Behavioral Healthcare, we value meaningful relationships with the children and families we serve. Those connections are often the foundation for progress, growth, and success.

💙 Discussion Question:
What is one way you build connection with a child before working on a skill or redirecting behavior?

April 5 – Autism Awareness Month 💙

Today’s Topic: Strengths Often Accompany Challenges

Autism can present challenges in areas such as communication, social interaction, or flexibility. At the same time, many individuals with autism also have unique strengths and abilities that deserve to be recognized and celebrated.

These strengths may include things like strong memory, attention to detail, creativity, honesty, persistence, or deep interests in specific topics. When we focus only on challenges, we risk overlooking the incredible abilities and potential each child has.

At Expressions Behavioral Healthcare, we believe in supporting growth while also recognizing and building on each child’s strengths. By understanding both challenges and abilities, we can better support learning, confidence, and independence.

💙 Discussion Question:
What is a strength you have noticed in a child you work with that makes them unique?

April 4 – Autism Awareness Month 💙

Today’s Topic: Sensory Needs Are Real

Many individuals with autism experience the world through heightened or reduced sensory sensitivities. Sounds, lights, textures, smells, or movement that may seem typical to others can sometimes feel overwhelming or uncomfortable, while other sensations may be actively sought out.

Sensory needs can look different for every child. Some children may cover their ears with loud noises, avoid certain clothing textures, or become overwhelmed in busy environments. Others may seek movement, enjoy deep pressure, or engage with sensory materials like sand, water, or fidget toys.

Understanding and respecting sensory needs helps create environments where children feel safe, regulated, and ready to learn.

At Expressions Behavioral Healthcare, we work to recognize each child’s sensory profile and provide supports and strategies that help them stay comfortable, engaged, and successful throughout their day.

💙 Discussion Question:
What is one sensory support or strategy you’ve seen help a child feel more comfortable or regulated?

At Expressions Behavioral Healthcare, we had such a fun time today! 🐣🌸

Our kiddos enjoyed an exciting egg hunt, got creative with arts and crafts, and topped it all off by decorating (and tasting 😉) delicious sugar cookies! Moments like these are what make our days so special—learning, laughter, and lots of smiles.

We love creating opportunities for fun, connection, and meaningful experiences for our kids every single day! 💛

April 3 – Autism Awareness Month 💙

Today’s Topic: Communication Is More Than Words

Communication is not limited to spoken language. Many children with autism communicate in a variety of ways, including gestures, pointing, facial expressions, body language, pictures, signs, or communication devices.

Every behavior can be a form of communication. A child may be communicating that they want something, need help, feel overwhelmed, or are excited about an activity. Recognizing and responding to these different forms of communication helps children feel understood and supported.

At Expressions Behavioral Healthcare, we focus on helping children build functional communication skills in ways that work best for them. Whether it’s spoken words, sign language, picture systems, or assistive technology, the goal is to give every child a meaningful way to express their needs, wants, and thoughts.

💙 Discussion Question:
What are some nonverbal ways you’ve seen a child communicate their wants or needs?
