April 3 – Autism Awareness Month 💙
Today’s Topic: Communication Is More Than Words
Communication is not limited to spoken language. Many children with autism communicate in a variety of ways, including gestures, pointing, facial expressions, body language, pictures, signs, or communication devices.
Every behavior can be a form of communication. A child may be communicating that they want something, need help, feel overwhelmed, or are excited about an activity. Recognizing and responding to these different forms of communication helps children feel understood and supported.
At Expressions Behavioral Healthcare, we focus on helping children build functional communication skills in ways that work best for them. Whether it’s spoken words, sign language, picture systems, or assistive technology, the goal is to give every child a meaningful way to express their needs, wants, and thoughts.
💙 Discussion Question:
What are some nonverbal ways you’ve seen a child communicate their wants or needs?
