She Came, She Saw, She Advocated.🔴

In honor of Women's History Month, Threshold would like to spotlight disability rights champion, Tia Nelis. Pictured above, Tia was one of the first self-advocates to be professionally employed and has used her position to make disability policy more accessible to other disabled folk. Her work will be remembered for decades because of its emphasis on humanization, choice, and community integration. Tia knew that the foundational promise of our nation - "life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness" - belonged to all of us.

A New Mural for our 60th Birthday! 🔴

On Tuesday, Threshold team members and clients collaborated with Total Experience Learning at Alvernia University to paint our new cafeteria mural (but not in the manner you'd expect). The mural was broken up into sections that will eventually be assembled and then attached to our cafeteria walls with a strong adhesive. Each attendee painted portions of these sections. The mural commemorates our 60th anniversary and commitment to serving Berks County.

Accessibility - First and Foremost. 🔴

On this World Day of Social Justice, Threshold asks you to consider the Americans with Disabilities Act. Robert Burgdorf's landmark piece of legislation served as a great first step toward mainstreaming accessibility accommodations. However, progress toward nationwide compliance has faltered. Many buildings still lack wheelchair ramps, automated doors, etc.

Threshold's Mosaic House clubhouse helps adults (18+) recovering from acute mental illnesses find work and a sense of belonging. Mosaic house members all play a role in the continued operation of the clubhouse. Members work together, learn vocational skills together, and grow together.

Threshold's Community Homes are vital to the growth and happiness of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities seeking to thrive in Berks County. Historically, the community home model has faced significant opposition from "NIMBY" (Not In My Backyard) residents. Federal legislation has discouraged this mindset (i.e., the Fair Housing Amendment Act & the Americans with Disabilities Act), but it, unfortunately, still persists.

Think of our friends with disabilities as neighbors, instead of an "other," and help us make a difference!
