If you know me you know I LOVE to walk & it’s a big part of my life. It’s also a huge part of my weight loss clients’ success.
Last year, I started hosting walking challenges and they’ve been a big hit!

While all trainers want their clients to get fit, they typically miss the mark on this ONE important factor…
The truth is… an hour in the gym or a Peleton class just simply isn’t enough to move the needle.
Your NEAT (Non- Exercise Activity Thermogenesis) matters even more. Most trainers never talk about this.
New studies show that getting at least 7k steps per day will reduce your death risk by 75%.
For weight loss & maintenance, we really need to be above 10k.
Most trainers don’t even ask about your overall movement.
I care about it the MOST.
Why? Because it matters even MORE than your workouts.

While most people in cold climates escape to the islands for Spring Break, we just returned from Utah, where we enjoyed Zion National Park, St. George, and lots of epic hikes and bikes along the journey. It was warm desert weather—something we love!
We also wanted to vacation with our dogs, so driving 7 hours to St. George seemed much better than flying!

On our trip, I averaged 15-20k steps per day — but here’s what I know about most of you reading this: you probably don’t reach even half of that on a typical day.
And you don’t need to, but most of you probably need to walk more (and consistently, am I right?!)
75% of Americans don’t meet basic movement requirements.

Workouts are great, but NEAT has changed my life. Here’s how…
For most of my teens and 20’s, I was obsessed with fitness & broke my body down because I couldn’t get my diet under control.
I always felt I had something to “fix”:
😫My weight (the same 10-15 lbs traumatized me)
😫My glutes (needed to be firmer)
😫My thighs (needed to be slimmer)
I know the above may sound ridiculous to you, but these thoughts HAUNTED me.
I’m sure you have body thoughts that haunt you, too.
Fast forward to 2020, I realized I had REAL things to fix:
✅My marriage: ended up not working out but I’m SO happy now
✅My business: it was scaling so quickly & I realized I needed help
✅My relationship with my body: I knew I had to chill out w/ the workouts to prevent injury
This is when I started visiting Colorado. Many of you say I “glow different” when I’m here.
✨Here’s why: the more time I spent in nature walking (a form of NEAT), the less I cared about my body’s “flaws”.
Walking was my opportunity to THINK.
To reflect.
To be creative.
And just BE ME. It was ME time, away from it all.
I spent the majority of my life avoiding all of the above. I’m a DOER and rarely a reflector. Anyone else with me?
🙏🏻What I realize now: Walking (NEAT) is my sacred time🙏🏻
And guess what? When I increased my NEAT:
✨I lost weight without even trying
✨My bloating disappeared
✨My stress levels subsided
✨My business felt lighter & easier
Now in 2026, I work out HALF as much as I did in 2020.
And when I stepped on the scale earlier this year, I was SHOCKED.
And as much as I still love weight training every week, it’s not the center of my life anymore.
I’m not suggesting we stop working out. I’m suggesting it may be time to step up your NEAT game.
Because if it changed my life, I bet it can change yours❤️🙏🏻

Your nutrition could probably be better, but I bet it’s this one MAJOR thing👇🏻
NEAT. This stands for Non-Exercise Activity Thermogenesis, and it’s absolutely CRUCIAL for your results in the short & most importantly LONG TERM.
What is NEAT?
🚶🏻♀️Walking
😃Fidgeting
🚶Standing & slightly moving
Gardening
🧹House cleaning
🙌🏻Any light activity that doesn’t necessarily break a sweat
If you have a step goal, you should start calling it your NEAT goal. That’s what we do in my world 🚶🏻♀️
Don’t count your steps? Start paying attention to how much you actually move each day.
Do you:
✔️Take the stairs instead of the elevator?
✔️Park farther away from your destination?
✔️Walk around Target, Costco, and the mall?
✔️Walk instead of Uber?
✔️Take mini-walk or pacing breaks in between meetings?
✔️Walk after you eat to improve digestion?
✔️Use your walking pad to watch Netflix?
These are all easy ways to increase your steps.
My favorite ways to get steps:
❤️Walk my dogs (which you see me do every day on my story)
❤️Catch up with friends or family and walk at the same time!
❤️Hike
❤️Stroll around town (I live in Telluride, CO)
❤️After dinner walks with Scott

I help people lose weight and keep it off through small, gradual changes in their diet and lifestyle. We do this in a 1:1 and group coaching style.
After starting my career in the health industry as a personal trainer and group exercise instructor, I succeeded in making exercise fun and helping clients integrate exercise into their weekly schedules to lose weight, build muscle, increase energy, and improve quality of life. However, what I learned over the years is how many people overlook the single most important part of changing our bodies-- nutrition.
I worked out with the same people-- private clients and class members--for years, and although they enjoyed working out and saw changes in their bodies, they still weren't 100% happy with themselves. Thousands of hours and dollars spent on personal training, gym memberships, and diet programs hadn't delivered their desired results. They admitted that exercising wasn't the issue; the problem was sticking to a diet consistently that aligned with their lifestyles.
I got lots of questions, and I still do today, about all of the diets out there. "Does Keto work?", "have you tried the Whole 30?", and, "should I start tracking my macros?" While these have helped many people lose weight, only a small percentage keep it off and end up looking for the next solution. The truth is that I have tried these in the past, had success, and then gained the weight back when, inevitably, I stopped following the "rules". I am 50% Italian, 50% Puerto Rican, and 100% female, so I cannot live happily without espresso, wine, chocolate, bread, and having a say in what and when I eat, thank you very much.
Long story short, after writing meal plans for clients and steering them in the right direction for healthier eating, I learned that permanent weight loss can be WAY more complex than having all of the right information and motivation, which, let's be serious, fluctuates as much as our weight does.
Permanent weight loss requires the following criteria:
Creating an action plan for eating more healthy foods
Limiting the unhealthy foods
Learning more about how our bodies work
Making little changes overtime on OUR terms
Celebrating small successes and not harping on setbacks
Having accountability for our behaviors
Once we commit to making these changes, build patience, and be honest with ourselves, we can create our weight. We create a lifestyle that we can sustain, and we find more joy in the weight loss journey.
