Pathogenes Inc

Pathogenes Inc Pathogenes is a consulting company that conducts research on the diseases Equine Protozoal Myeloencephalitis and Polyneuritis equi. Pathogenes Inc.

We lead the PNE research field and are the best resource for veterinarians that want to understand and treat PNE. was founded in 1999 and is dedicated to the development of reagents to diagnose, treat, and prevent animal diseases. works with industry partners to facilitate development of their projects. Our ability to apply innovative techniques has helped produce novel products that benefit the animal health industry. We have active, collaborative partnerships with researchers in industry, universities, and individuals in the United States and Europe. We offer tech support to veterinarians that use our technology at our laboratory hotline. Pathogenes developed surface antigens from Sarcocystis neurona, for antibody detection in serum and CSF. We also created an equine animal model to advance the study of equine protozoal myeloencephalitis (EPM) in horses. A reliable animal model allowed us to recognize early signs of EPM facilitating the design of early treatment protocols. Our animal model is used by industry partners to determine pathogenesis of disease as well as treatment and vaccine efficacy in horses. Pathogenes recognized and developed novel tissue culture techniques that are used to create new parasite vaccines. We continue to develop protocols and products that facilitate the understanding and treatment of disease and license our technology to further the health and well-being of animals.

EPM has been around a long time. In 1999, I began to develop tools to understand the disease and develop diagnostic tests. Many tools were missing. The story that unfolded is told in our publications. The key to EPM was understanding the parasite, Sarcocystis neurona, and how it infects horses. How....

Often signs of neuromuscular disease includes weakness, unusual or atypical lameness, behavior changes, seizures, and signs often recur after treatment. Clinical signs can vary from acute to chronic. Our data base evaluted over the last 10 years shows the mortality rate of horses is 3.6%, just above the USDA 2015 National rate of 3.3%. Horses without a diagnosis of EPM or PNE had a 1.5% mortality rate. Horses with a presumptive diagnosis of EPM had a mortality rate of 5%. However, Horses with a diagnosis of PNE had a mortality rate of 56%. PNE is a progressive lethal disease that needs treatment options.
