I’m sharing this because of the dramatic change this diet has made for a patient’s gums. Over the last 10 years I have been tracking bleeding and build up of tarter ( calculus) on her teeth. Nothing really seamed to make a difference until she started this diet in March. Not only has she lost 13 pounds, she will save money on cleanings because she doesn’t need me so often!

For a Smile:

Did you hear about the Buddhist who refused Novocain during a root canal? His goal: transcend dental medication.

More reason to have healthy gums!

A collaborative study has found more evidence supporting an association between increased cancer risk among patients with bleeding inflamed gums (periodontitis). The study “Periodontal Disease Assessed Using Clinical Dental Measurements and Cancer Risk in the ARIC Study” published in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute, found a 24% increase in the risk of developing cancer among participants with severe periodontitis—defined as more than 30% of sites with gum attachment loss greater than 3 mm—compared with those who had mild to no periodontitis. Among participants who had no teeth, cancer risk increased by 28%.

Researchers from Tufts University School of Medicine in Boston and Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health and Kimmel Cancer Center in Baltimore used data from the Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities (ARIC) study, which included comprehensive dental exams from 7,466 participants from Maryland, Minnesota, Mississippi, and North Carolina. Study subjects were followed from the late 1990s until 2012. The data showed that 1,648 new cancer cases were diagnosed during the follow-up period.

Investigators discovered that participants with severe periodontitis had more than double the risk of lung cancer than those with no/mild periodontitis. An 80% increase in colon cancer risk was observed for participants who were edentulous (no teeth) at baseline and, interestingly, among never smokers. A two-fold increase in colon cancer risk was observed for participants with severe periodontitis compared with those who had no/mild periodontitis. No associations were found for breast, prostate, or hematopoietic/lymphatic cancer risk. The researchers suggest that additional study is needed to learn more about the effects of site-specifics and racial differences on cancer risk and the presence of periodontitis.

While over-the-counter teething gels and teething tablets have been controversial due to the numbing action that can also numb the throat and, thus, hinder swallowing, the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) warns that select homeopathic teething gels and tablets contain traces of belladonna. This toxic substance is formulated with chemicals that are capable of blocking functions of the body’s nervous system. In some cases, the FDA found the amount of belladonna to be far higher than that listed on the drug label.

I advise parents and caregivers of young children who utilize such homeopathic remedies that continued use poses a risk. In addition, the FDA encourages parents/caregivers to report adverse events associated with these products. Reports can be submitted to fda.gov/medwatch/report.htm. The FDA also advises consumers to seek emergency care should the use of homeopathic teething tablets or gels result in seizures, difficulty breathing, lethargy, excessive sleepiness, muscle weakness, skin flushing, constipation, difficulty urinating, or agitation.
