Alopecia Areata is an autoimmune condition in which the body attacks its own hair follicles. The exact cause is unknown and it can affect people of all ages. There are various treatments for Alopecia Areata including topical steroids, intralesional steroids, and other systemic medications. It can sometimes present with the presence of other autoimmune diseases such a thyroid disease. Therefore, your medical provider may order some extra blood tests if indicated.

While AK itself is not cancerous, it is considered pre-cancerous and can potentially progress to squamous cell carcinoma if left untreated. 🤯 Did you know that skin cancer is the most common type of cancer?

‼️ The 3 most common types of skin cancer are squamous cell carcinoma, basal cell carcinoma, and melanoma. Melanoma is much less common than the other types but much more likely to invade nearby tissue and spread to other parts of the body. Most deaths from skin cancer are caused by melanoma.

Friendly reminder to wear your SPF and cover up this summer! July is Ultraviolet (UV) Safety Awareness Month. While UV radiation offers some benefits, such as Vitamin D, overexposure to UV rays from the sun can lead to premature aging, sunburn, and skin cancer. Before you go out, make sure you are prepared to protect your skin with the appropriate apparel and sunscreen. Also, make sure you are doing regular skin checks and see your local dermatologist at least annually.
