Them: “You can’t push, the doctor isn’t here”
Me: “It’s ok! You listen to your body. You’re doing great”
——
This has happened tooooooo many times and it’s not ok! When someone is giving birth and their body has the fetal ejection reflex, it’s beyond their control. That feeling is overwhelming. When you’re told not to push and “just breathe until the doctor gets here” just know, that I am going to encourage you to listen to your body. Lean in to it, don’t resist.

There’s a difference between pain and suffering. Between discomfort and a reflex. A protocol and BIRTH.

It’s time for the hospital to make changes instead of expecting women to suffer and not push. I will ALWAYS advocate for you to push. You don’t need to suffer and cry and beg!

You can work to have whatever kind of birth you want 💯

✨If you want an epidural - get one!! No judgement.
✨If you do not want an IV port - thats your choice!
✨If you want to labor unmedicated - let’s do it!
✨If you want a planned cesarean birth - I am here for it!
✨If you want true delayed cord clamping - heck yeah!
✨If you decline an induction - let’s wait for labor!
✨If you plan to exclusively pump or bottle feed, that’s your choice and you have your own reason for it.

It’s when you’re forced to do something you do NOT want (outside of a true emergency, of course) that’s not ok. I am not here for it.

Having autonomy in birth doesn’t mean you want an unmedicated birth. It means you have a chance to be an active participant in your birth. You get to have true informed consent/refusal. It’s your birth, your body, your choice, period.

In order to have true informed decision making, then there must be unbiased information presented so YOU can decide. It’s simple: you get information, risks and benefits, then you decide without pressure or shame. Pssst: that’s what I am there to help with as a doula 🙌🏽

The best births happen when parents get to advocate for what they want as their birth unfolds. If your plan changes, that’s ok. Buuuuut coercing parents to do things based on fear and protocol, that is not true informed decision making. If you feel like you have no choice, that’s not true informed decision making.

Did you have things in your labor, birth, or postpartum that you were pressured to do?

✨A successful VBAC story✨

This mama advocated so hard and strong for herself! It’s really hard as a pregnant person to quiet all the outside noise / fear to really listen to your intuition and uncover what you really want outside of everyone’s opinions.

The sad reality is that if you want a VBAC, you have to be willing to push back (period!) and that’s exactly what she did!

When I met Hayley, she knew she wanted a VBAC. She felt strongly that she wanted a trial at labor. She was low risk and the perfect candidate! We did lots of education and then waited to see how things played out.

Her OB wanted to induce her at 39 weeks. But there was not real good reason to induce other than that’s what they do for every other person who wants a VBAC. They will say “sure, you can try for a VBAC as long as you have your baby before 39 weeks” —— by the way, a provider who says that does not truly support you having the opportunity for a VBAC.

She declined the induction. And it wasn’t easy, but she bought herself another week and said she’d like to wait until 40 weeks.

40 weeks came and went. There was a scheduled cesarean and she didn’t show up. 🙌🏽🙌🏽 She didn’t show because her and baby were healthy, she understood her risk, and she KNEW her estimated due date was wrong (by over a week).

She didn’t want to go in for surgery because she wanted to wait for baby to be ready. She wanted more than anything for her body to spontaneously go in to labor. She knew that was her best chance at a va**nal birth. Another induction could lead to another c-section.

41 weeks came and went. She was certain she was actually only almost 40 weeks.

Then eventually, at 42 weeks (on paper) she went in to labor. Even in the throes of labor, she had to sign papers says that she wanted to try for a va**na birth against medical recommendation.

She got an epidural and continued with her trial at labor. She dilated quite quickly, her body was opening, baby was descending, and it was time to push.

She did it! She had her va**nal birth 💪 🥹
It was incredible to witness her birth
Everyone was happy and healthy

Birth is nuanced. There is not one-size-fits-all.

✨A successful VBAC story✨

This is my cousin and she knows how to 👏🏾advocate👏🏾 for👏🏾 herself… which is absolutely necessary if you’re wanting a VBAC‼️

When she went into labor and got to the hospital they wanted to rush her back for a cesarean. She declined and said she wanted to have a va**nal birth. They said she shouldn’t do that because her previous baby (who was breech) was born too recently. They went over all the risks (highlighting the worst case scenarios) and she said she was aware of the risks and wanted to continue with her birth.

Then, they brought a doctor in to try and scare her. Then ANOTHER doctor. And let me tell you, at this point, it’s hard to push back without the proper support. They can really make you feel like you’re putting your baby in unnecessary danger or that you’re being negligent.
But, she persisted and said again that she was aware of the risks and wanted to proceed.

What doctors don’t tell you is that the risks are very low. — like, less than 1%. So you basically have a 99% chance of NOT having a uterine rupture.

Then they had her sign an AMA (against medical advice) to release them of any liability. 😱
So she did! ✍️

Then she pushed twice and her baby came flying out.
Both mom and baby were healthy.

Here’s the thing, she knew she could do it. She had three va**nal births before her cesarean. She wanted a fair chance to labor and birth HER way. It’s her body and her baby. Should there be any red flags, she was in the hospital and they could help her but there were no red flags —- it was just protocol. Simpler. More money.

I share this story because it’s possible. You can do this too. Everyone deserves a trial at labor after a cesarean if that’s what you want!

She did it 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
Was it easy? Nope!
She was encouraged to induce at 37 weeks due to cholestasis. She had cholestasis with her first baby, so this wasn’t her first rodeo. She did all the research, knew the numbers, and how to best support herself and her baby. She declined the induction, not out of ignorance but with facts. She pushed for weekly tests, had a clean diet, herbal support, and took things one step at a time.

Her body went in to spontaneous labor at almost 40 weeks. She labored at home as long as possible. At the hospital, she declined pain the IV port, pain meds, all the things. This is what she wanted and she did it!!!

This isn’t always the happy ending people get but she did what she could with what she was in control of and had surrender to what was beyond her control and it all worked out.

She’s a birth warrior!!! Empowered, confident, and knows she can advocate for herself. I am so proud of this QUEEN 👑

It’s been raining babies and it’s not even a full moon. There’s been three births in 4 days. 💙🩷💙
Being “with woman” is truly magical. Three babies, three families, three completely different labor patterns, three different timelines, three different ways of coping, three different ways I get to show up. The best thing I can do is meet mom and baby where they are and be of service. Things are NOT black and white, it all happens in the grey — in the unknown.

Here’s the thing about cesarean births….

🤍 There are legitimate reasons people need cesareans! Usually your baby and body will give signs when things are headed that direction despite “doing all the things”, and thank goodness cesareans are an option!

🤍 Having agency is important, just like any birth! That means you can decide to have an elective cesarean. You can decide at any point that’s the path you want. You can say you want immediate skin to skin, delayed cord clamping, and other options that should still be made available to you when at all possible. We know these things have amazing benefits for mom and baby.

👎🏽 The problem is - fear mongering and unnecessary cesareans. Which happens way more than I wish was the case.

👎🏽 Inductions are the new norm and a big reason for the “cascade of interventions” which ends in a cesarean. Meanwhile, usually the induction wasn’t even medically necessary

👎🏽 Then alot of practitioners claim to be “ok” with a VBAC but then don’t give people a true trial at labor come the time for birth. That’s not cool. All of a sudden, baby has to be out by 39 weeks, or is looking big, or some non-medical reason that is used for coercion.

👎🏽 We don’t have proper support for postpartum care as it is, and with a cesarean, we definitely need that extra support.

🤍The good news is — doulas can help with all of this! Whether it’s a planned or unplanned cesarean birth, we got you and can absolutely help this process.

🤍 Over the past 11 years, I’ve had 6 clients have a cesarean birth, none in which were unnecessary. I know for sure there was a calm, confidence, and level of support that these families had that they wouldn’t have otherwise had without a doula.

🤍 Reach out for questions, support, birth story debriefing, referral, or anything you think I could help with.
