Lucky me šŸ€
Look at this cutie baby! We aren’t getting pinched today.

————-
Three births in one week.
Their due dates were spread out over the month of March and all three came in the same week. This happens often. Back-to-back babies.
Somehow, it always works out and I am so grateful that the case.

I want to hold space for all of those who have births that, despite doing ā€œall the thingsā€, ended up going sideways.

I want to hold space for those who wanted a redemptive birth and gave it their all with choosing a good care team, got educated, prepped their mind and body, and still they were the .04% that has a different ending.

I want to hold space for all of those who did everything they could for a trauma-free birth and yet, there was still trauma and deep grief around how things went.

I want to hold space for all the folks who didn’t get immediate skin-to-skin with their baby, or photos, or even remember the first moments… or maybe don’t want to remember.

Holding space for all those who feel stuck in grief and sadness in their postpartum period and have lost hope about birth being a ā€œbeautiful experience.

Not every birth has a happy ending. I wish we could promise that to everyone… but they deserve to feel seen and heard, too. It’s hard! I will hold space for you and sit with you in your grief.

Love you.

In home care is family centered care šŸ¤

This sweet family had a homebirth birth and I had the pleasure of being at their last homebirth, too. My heart is so full being able to bear witness to their growing family.

Pic 1, 2, 3 - postpartum care and making muffins for the family with big brother’s help (melt my heart!!!)
Pic 4 - snuggling baby brother right after his brand new baby sister was born in their bathtub
Pic 5 - in home prenatal meeting as we prepare for baby sister’s home birth. The kids were playing and part of the whole process.

& - love you guys and your beaaaaaautiful babies! Thanks for having me as part of your care team!!! xoxoxo

If you need me to go to an appointment with you, I got you! This is a VBAC client who really doesn’t want any fear or coercion to get a routine repeat cesarean. Her and baby are healthy, low risk, and she wants a trial at labor (TOLAC). But let’s be honest, the end of pregnancy is haaaaarrrdddd and it can be easy to be swayed because you just want this baby to be born (IYKYK). I am there to hold confidence and hope for you. We will take it one day at a time, one step at a time, pivot if needed, and walk through this journey together. I will hold strong to your desires and hold your hand when things feel really hard (mentally, physically, emotionally).

Doula support is not just birth support — it’s mental, emotional, and physical. It’s being there for you whenever you need it, which is sometimes 2am. It’s providing continuity of care for you from pregnancy, to birth and postpartum.

I met Ashely early in her pregnancy. It was cool to connect early on and have longevity. She told me they didn’t want to know if they were having a boy or girl until their birth day. I looooove this, it’s so rare these days.

Ashely & Brandon are so connected and have such a beautiful relationship. They know how to advocate, listen to concerns, then use data and their intuition to make their decision. They wanted a spontaneous labor and although that didn’t happen, they beautifully navigated a super short induction without needing Pitocin. It was quiet and calm as Ashley pushed and they welcomed their baby BOY.

I am grateful to have navigated their pregnancy & birth journey along side them. And oh my gooooooodness their baby boy was so cute and squishhhyyy, just shy of 9lbs. šŸ˜šŸ˜šŸ˜

Birth vibessssss…. Am I right?! šŸ˜

Laboring at home allows for labor to progress in a calm environment where you feel safe, unobserved and not on a tight time line. For early labor, cozy up and rest (!!!)

Even if you’re giving birth at the hosptial, it’s still incredibly beneficial to labor at home until you’re in a good labor pattern. Since early labor is the longest, stay home, rest, eat a nutrient dense meal, hydrate and then rest/sleep some more.

When things shift, you can find what movement works for you, head to the hospital, or continue at home. This is pretty nuanced depending on what your birth preferences are, but working with a doula can help you navigate active labor based on YOU.

Coping through labor is the passing of a baton. What works in early labor usually looks different in active labor then shifts again during transition.

We work on several coping techniques because you never know what will work in the throes of labor. And we use what works until it’s no longer working and we need to switch it up.

Movement, breath, counter pressure, heat/cold, the shower (water!), visualization, surrender and sometimes sheer grit.

We talk about coping even if you’re planning for an epidural because I’ve seen too many times where the epidural doesn’t work properly or labor progresses too quickly.

What worked for you in labor?

It’s undeniable that the presence of a doula makes šŸ‘šŸ¾ ašŸ‘šŸ¾ difference! It’s about individualized, personalized care, deep listening and honoring bodily autonomy.

We saw it crystal clear with Kaylene’s birth. Before my arrival, the mood was much different and unfortunately, the medical staff thought ā€œshe didn’t need an epiduralā€ 😳😳 which is just wild. (Usually it’s the opposite and staff is pushing the now-or-never epidural).

When I arrived, we advocated strongly for pain management and finally, she got what she needed/wanted. They did apologize after, but the way things can shifted was quite remarkable. Whether you do or do not want medication isn’t the point, it’s more about honoring people’s intuition and requests. Period.

I am always honored to hold space for birth and advocated strongly. I truly will say what needs to be said if that’s how you need me to show up. If you need me to sit and bear witness, I can do that too. There is no one size fits all.

Love youuuuuu, Kaylene šŸ¤

Seriously, there is literally no way I could do this job without him. When I leave for a birth, I say bye and legitimately don’t know when I’ll be back. I kiss my babies (usually in the middle of the night) then head out the door. Thankfully, my husband has it covered — he gets the kids ready for school, takes them to school, he goes to work, picks them up, does homework, dinner, baths, all the things. And honestly, this is what allows me to be present with my amazing clients…..!! I know my kids are with their dad and in the best care. It’s truly such a gift!! Thanks, babbbbeeeee!!!! 😘

Here’s the thing about cesarean births….

šŸ¤ There are legitimate reasons people need cesareans! Usually your baby and body will give signs when things are headed that direction despite ā€œdoing all the thingsā€, and thank goodness cesareans are an option!

šŸ¤ Having agency is important, just like any birth! That means you can decide to have an elective cesarean. You can decide at any point that’s the path you want. You can say you want immediate skin to skin, delayed cord clamping, and other options that should still be made available to you when at all possible. We know these things have amazing benefits for mom and baby.

šŸ‘ŽšŸ½ The problem is - fear mongering and unnecessary cesareans. Which happens way more than I wish was the case.

šŸ‘ŽšŸ½ Inductions are the new norm and a big reason for the ā€œcascade of interventionsā€ which ends in a cesarean. Meanwhile, usually the induction wasn’t even medically necessary

šŸ‘ŽšŸ½ Then alot of practitioners claim to be ā€œokā€ with a VBAC but then don’t give people a true trial at labor come the time for birth. That’s not cool. All of a sudden, baby has to be out by 39 weeks, or is looking big, or some non-medical reason that is used for coercion.

šŸ‘ŽšŸ½ We don’t have proper support for postpartum care as it is, and with a cesarean, we definitely need that extra support.

šŸ¤The good news is — doulas can help with all of this! Whether it’s a planned or unplanned cesarean birth, we got you and can absolutely help this process.

šŸ¤ Over the past 11 years, I’ve had 6 clients have a cesarean birth, none in which were unnecessary. I know for sure there was a calm, confidence, and level of support that these families had that they wouldn’t have otherwise had without a doula.

šŸ¤ Reach out for questions, support, birth story debriefing, referral, or anything you think I could help with.
