From Bentonia to Wisconsin.

When I traveled to Bentonia, Mississippi for the 77th anniversary of the Blue Front Café, the oldest juke joint in Mississippi, I went to document a place and the people who gather there. What I didn’t expect was to be handed a recipe with full Southern soul and heart.

At the Blue Front, Cathy and Genevieve generously shared how they make their shrimp & grits. It wasn’t written down. And Larry, who has created such a special meeting place at the festivals, they have dedicated a special tree to him with a sign reading “Larry’s Tribe.”

I carried that recipe home with me and cooked it for the first time in Wisconsin in my parents’ kitchen, for the Christmas holiday, bringing a little bit of Southern soul and hospitality to the Midwest.

This story is about how food travels, and how music, meals, and kindness cross state lines.

I recently met a woman from Venezuela who told me her journey — a journey filled with loss, courage, and unimaginable strength.
It reminded me how we pass people every day not knowing what they’re carrying and what they have endured.

I never imagined this seed of an idea, which started in my living room, would lead me to meeting and interviewing the last living Bentonia Blues legend, Jimmy Duck Holmes, and being interviewed on WWOZ, the iconic New Orleans Radio station. Meet Riccardo Ferrini, Blues musician from Italy, busking in the French Quarter in New Orleans.

I had the original opportunity to meet Riccardo when he was playing at the Blue Front Cafe 77th anniversary in Bentonia, MS, and was thrilled to find him again in New Orleans. He is an INCREDIBLE slide guitarist, EXTREMELY kind, and the KING OF COOL! Fortunate to know Riccardo and call him my friend.

It's no secret, New Orleans has long held a special place in my heart. I always said if I lived there, I would become deeply ingrained in the culture and fabric of that city. So to be invited to be interviewed by Ol' Man River on WWOZ Radio, the Voice of New Orleans, and to be ingratiated into the community and to make so many new connections without actually living there is like a true dream come true.
