I grew up in the 1970s working construction with my dad and my brother. Hard physical labor was just part of life.
When I was in 9th grade, I discovered weightlifting in a backyard using a bench my friend bought from Sears. Nothing fancy, just curls, bench press, and consistency.
Something changed. My body responded, but more importantly, my mindset changed.
While other kids were spending hours on video games, I was building discipline, confidence, and purpose. By 10th grade, I was bench pressing 315 lbs as one of the youngest students in my class. Years later, I pushed that number to 625 lbs.
Weightlifting didn’t just shape my body, it shaped my life. It kept me focused, helped me avoid many of the pitfalls young people face, and gave me confidence that carried me through my 20s, 30s, 40s, and now into my 60s.
Today, people still tell me I have an impressive physique, but the real gift wasn’t muscles, it was self-belief, discipline, and faith. I credit my success to training, consistency, and my love for the Lord.
Now I want to ask parents a question:
What if your child started building confidence through strength today?
What would it mean for them to walk into junior high, high school, college, or even their first job already confident in who they are, strong in body, kind in heart, and disciplined in mind?
I’m not saying physique is everything. But a strong body combined with character and confidence can open doors for a lifetime.
