Influenza cases and hospital admissions are increasing in California.
While there are new strains all the time, current influenza vaccines are still expected to offer protection against severe disease.
Call and get vaccinated.
We vaccinate because-
• Prevents illness and reduces severity: The vaccine lowers your chance of getting the flu. Even if you do get sick, the vaccine has been shown to reduce the severity of your illness, the risk of complications, and your chances of hospitalization or death.
• Protects vulnerable people: Getting vaccinated helps protect those around you who are at higher risk for severe illness, such as infants younger than 6 months (who are too young to be vaccinated), older adults, and people with chronic health conditions (e.g., asthma, diabetes, heart disease).
• Immunity wanes and viruses change: Protection from a flu shot declines over time, and flu viruses are constantly evolving. A new vaccine is created each year to protect against the specific strains expected to be most common during the upcoming season, so an annual shot is necessary for optimal protection.
• It is safe and effective: The flu shot contains an inactivated (dead) virus or only a single protein, so it cannot give you the flu. Mild side effects (like a sore arm or low-grade fever) are normal and typically go away within a day or two
If you do get the Flu, call you provider to talk about next steps.
