Hanukkah and Kwanzaa are near, and with all the delicious frying and holiday cooking, fire risks can rise. Keep celebrations safe with these simple tips:

• Stay in the kitchen when you’re frying or cooking on the stovetop.
• Keep anything that can burn — towels, packaging, decorations — away from the heat.
• Turn pot handles inward to prevent spills and burns.
• Keep kids and pets at least 3 feet from the cooking area.

The National Weather Service is forecasting heavy rain and strong wind gusts tonight into Friday. Make sure to drive carefully if traveling. If you have outdoor inflatable holiday decorations, it would be a good idea to keep them off until Saturday.

Whether you're putting up a few strings of Christmas lights or channeling Clark Griswold this season, please use outdoor decorations safely. Inspect them for wear and discard them in damaged, read and follow the manufacturer's safety info, be sure your outdoor outlets have Ground Fault Circuit Interrupters installed, and only use outdoor-rated extension cords. Each year, nearly 39,000 home heating fires lead to 432 fatalities, 1,352 injuries, and $1.1B in property damage. Home heating equipment includes furnaces, fireplaces, wood stoves, and space heaters.

Most of the danger comes from space heaters and heating stoves, which cause 30% of these fires and 77% of the fatalities.

Reduce your risk of a fire with these tips:

✅ Get your chimney inspected and swept to avoid creosote fires.
✅ Avoid green or treated wood, which create excess creosote and harmful fumes.
✅ Dispose of cooled ashes in a metal container away from your home.
✅ Maintain at least 3 feet of clearance around your fireplace or stove for safety.
✅ Check your smoke & carbon monoxide detectors monthly while using home heating equipment.
✅ Never leave a stove, fireplace, or space heater unattended.
✅ Never use flammable liquids or paper to start a fire.

Stay warm and safe this winter by following these tips to reduce your risk and keep your home cozy all season long.
