Children with late language emergence, or “late talkers” almost always say fewer than 50 words and do not use two or more words
together by 24 months. But are there other signs of a language delay?

YES!

Children who develop language later tend to also
⭐️ use less gestures
⭐️ not understand as many words as their peers
⭐️ say less consonant and vowel sounds as their peers
⭐️ immature play skills compared to their peers

Play skills and speech sound development are intertwined with language development. An evaluation for a language delay from Small Talk Speech Therapy will include an assessment of the child’s language, speech, and play skills so we can develop a completely personalized therapy plan based on your child’s needs so they can make steady and meaningful growth!

Children with late language emergence, often labeled as “late talkers,” are usually excellent candidates for direct speech therapy and parent coaching!

There are multiple signs of a late language emergence, however, research supports that the top two signs of a delay are children saying less than 50 words and not combining two words together (such as “more juice,” “banana please,” “car go”) by 24 months old.

Small Talk Speech Therapy offers lots of resources for your family if you are concerned that your child might be a late talker. We offer one on one parent coaching sessions to show you ways to support your child’s language development at home. We also offer comprehensive evaluations and direct speech and language therapy.

Should you “wait and see” if you have concerns about how your child is developing language?

It is NOT recommended if you have concerns about your child falling behind in reaching their language milestones.

Research has shown that 20-30% of late talkers do not grow out of their delays and will have ongoing language and literacy needs.

The 70-80% of children who do catch up may continue to have language and literacy weaknesses, social language difficulties, and language processing difficulties. Even children who seem to “catch up” might continue to be at a disadvantage compared to their typically developing peers.

There is no way to know if a child is going to catch up or be in the group that doesn’t.

What can be done to help?
Early intervention! Research has shown that providing speech therapy as early as possible can improve language skills and increase their long-term language and literacy skills in the future.

You can self refer to Small Talk Speech Therapy and speak to a licensed speech-language pathologist about your concerns today!

Children start communicating before they say their first words! They start cooing around 2 months old, progress to blowing raspberries around 4 months old, and babbling around 7 months old before saying words around 12 months old.

⭐️ What counts as a true word?
Any word that a child uses consistently to refer to the same thing. It doesn’t have to sound like how an adult would say it. For example if a child calls the dog “woo,” but they are using that label to intentionally and consistently call the dog that, it would be considered a word.

⭐️ Animal sounds also count as words. For example, it a child refers to a cow as a “moo”

⭐️ Signs and gestures also count! The key is consistently and intentionality!

Typical milestones for a child’s word development are:
🌟 2-10 words by 15 months old
🌟 20-60 words by 18 months old
🌟 60+ words by 24 months old
🌟 1000 words by 36 months old

Remember a milestone is when 90% of children acquire a skill. Some children are on different timelines and that’s okay! It’s important to meet children at their developmental stage.

If you have concerns about your child’s language development, speak to a speech-language pathologist who can give you professional recommendations!

Let’s talk about language this week! Language can be categorized into different types.

🧠Receptive language is how you understand what people are saying. This includes being able to follow directions and answer questions.

🗣Expressive language is how you use language to communicate a message. This includes vocabulary, grammar, and sentence structure. Not all expressive language is verbal though! People can use assistive communication devices, gestures, and sign language to communicate expressively.

👋🏻Pragmatic language is how you use language socially. In young children, this begins to develop as they learn how to play. As children get older this can be seen in how they communicate and act around others.

All types of language begin developing at birth. Early intervention with speech therapy can have a significant positive impact on a child’s ability to acquire language if there are delays. Scientific evidence supports the involvement of a speech-language pathologist to help children develop language skills needed for them to understand and use language!

Receptive, expressive, and pragmatic language will all be assessed during a comprehensive evaluation.

These are the average ages that children should be able to say English consonant sounds. By the age listed, 90% of children are able to correctly say that sound according to recent research (McLoed & Crowe, 2018).

First, children learn how to make vowel sounds then they start making consonant sounds and combining them together. Like when a baby says “baba” and “mama.” Consonant sounds continue to develop until 6 years old.

During a speech sound evaluation, a speech-language pathologist will take an inventory of all English consonant sounds and vowels that a child is producing and analyze the errors they are making and make a diagnosis based on the results. A therapeutic plan is decided on with the parents about what sounds to work on and therapy begins!

"I understand my child, but other people can't" is something I have heard a lot from parents.

As parents, we become really good "translators" for our kids because we usually know what they are trying to say. Although parents might be good at deciphering their child's message, other people may have a really hard time. This may cause frustration or embarrassment for the child.
The rule of thumb is by 2 years old, other people should be able to understand 50% of what children say. By age 3, other people should be able to understand 75% of what your child says. And by age 4, your child should be able to be understood 100% of the time by anyone they speak to.

If you and others have a difficult time understanding your child, they may be a candidate for speech therapy. Contact us today for a consult and have your questions answered by a licensed speech-language pathologist!

Lisps are one of my favorite speech errors to treat! Having a clear /s/ sound makes a big difference in how a child sounds when they talk. I like to treat frontal lisps around 4 years old and lateral lisps even earlier! Early treatment makes a big impact in treating speech and language disorders. The earlier kids are treated, sometimes the easier it is to fix their errors (and sometimes quicker too)!
