Throughout this month, we have been spotlighting Child Life Specialists; the dedicated professionals who support children through hospital stays, procedures, and treatments with compassion and creativity. They provide therapeutic play, education, coping strategies, and emotional support to make every visit less stressful and more empowering for patients.

Child Life Specialists help children understand what is happening, express their feelings, and regain a sense of normalcy in what can feel like an overwhelming environment. Their work ensures that every child has a voice, comfort, and moments of joy, even during the most challenging medical experiences.

Why Wednesday | “Child Life changes lives. And it changed mine.” 💜

Meet Mary, one of the newest members of the Renown Children's Hospital Child Life team, who helps make the hardest days a little lighter for kids and families in northern Nevada.

“When I first learned about Child Life, it felt like an a-ha moment. A career where I could show love and support to little ones and their incredible support systems every single day? Sign me up!

Child Life is not an easy field to enter, and Nevada has historically been one of the most challenging states to break into. As I pursued this profession and encountered barriers, I kept reminding myself that each challenge was preparing me for the realities of the work itself. These kids deserve an empathetic, patient, resilient, self-regulated advocate in me. I knew in my heart that striving with everything I had to make this dream a reality would be more than worth it.

Worth it when I help a toddler through their first port access after their family learns of a devastating, life-altering diagnosis. Worth it when a teen spends their birthday in the hospital and still gets to smile and feel celebrated. Worth it when a school-aged child thinks they can't do something hard and proves themselves wrong every. single. time.

This team at Renown shows up every day to make the hardest parts of hospitalization just a little lighter, the smiles a little bigger, and the days a little brighter. Child Life changes lives. And it changed mine.” 💜

Last Friday we had an incredible afternoon at our very first Children's Miracle Network Annual Partner Kickoff at Renown Children's Hospital!

We gathered with our amazing partners to celebrate raising $1,311,302.27 for Renown Children's Hospital in 2025, meet our 2026 Miracle Kids, and officially launch the 2026 fundraising year. The room was filled with gratitude, momentum, and a shared commitment to change kids’ health right here in northern Nevada.

To every partner who joined us, whether you’ve been with us for decades or are just getting started, thank you. Because of you, miracles happen close to home.

🎉Meet the third and final 2026 CMN Miracle Kid, Gabe! 💜

Gabe is a 10-year-old who has spent much of his life navigating gastrointestinal challenges. After surgeries, infections, and long hospital stays, he meets each day with a positive spirit. Gabe enjoys sharing his story, so other kids facing GI challenges know they are not alone. When he’s feeling well, he loves roller-skating, building with Legos, and snacking on cookies 'n cream ice cream.

We are so proud to have Gabe represent Renown Children's Hospital and Children's Miracle Network throughout 2026. His strength, resilience, and heart for others will inspire us all. 💫

Why Wednesday | “my WHY is the kids that I get to support each and every day” 💜

Meet Amanda, a Certified Child Life Specialist at Renown Children's Hospital, whose heart for kids shines through in everything she does. As we celebrate Child Life Month, Amanda is the first feature in our Why Wednesday series, highlighting the incredible impact of Child Life at Renown Children’s Hospital, your local Children's Miracle Network hospital.

“As a certified child life specialist, my WHY is the kids that I get to support each and every day. From a medical play session to help understand IV straws, to explaining brain tumors with play-doh, and celebrating milestones through play, no two days are the same. When children are provided information at a level they can understand, their emotional safety skyrockets and an environment that may have felt scary at first, now feels safe. A child’s work is to play and helping facilitate that in the hospital is something that I feel honored to do.

My WHY is so all children that come to Renown can have access to child life services. My WHY is so I can partner with nurses and doctors to promote positive coping for our patients. My WHY is so children can think back on their childhood experiences in healthcare with a smile. My WHY is for all kids and for their futures.”

Helping kids like LeAnne has never been so sweet. 🍦💛💙

Thanks to donations from Children's Miracle Network partners like Dairy Queen, LeAnne has been able to stay strong and persevere through treatment for leukemia. She is scheduled to ring the bell this August, just before the start of her junior year of high school!
