If you’re feeling low this winter, our board-certified music therapists have you covered. Here are 5 music-therapist-approved ways to lift your mood:
1️⃣Listen to music that makes you move
Less daylight often means less movement. Upbeat music naturally increases physical activity, which supports mood-boosting neurotransmitters like dopamine and serotonin. Even gentle movement counts—dance, sway, tap, stretch.
2️⃣Create a “safe” or comforting playlist
Music tied to positive memories or a sense of calm can regulate the nervous system. Familiar, preferred music helps reduce stress hormones and can create emotional safety during overwhelming seasons.
3️⃣Sing—even if it’s just in the car or shower
Singing supports deep breathing, stimulates the vagus nerve, and releases endorphins. It’s one of the fastest ways to shift mood and reconnect with your body.
4️⃣Use music intentionally
Instead of background noise, try focused listening: notice the rhythm, lyrics, or instruments. Intentional listening increases mindfulness and helps interrupt anxious or low thought patterns.
5️⃣Match your music to how you feel—then gently guide it
Feeling low? Start with reflective music, then transition to something lighter or more energizing.
