We trust that each person who steps through our doors has inherent wisdom within each of themselves. Wise mind is a critical skill in DBT and is the mindfulness practice of integrating both logic and emotion to find that inner wisdom. Your wise mind adds intuitive knowing to your emotional experience though use of mindful awareness with practice of DBTs core mindfulness skills. Relating what we know (reasonable mind) to how we feel (emotional mind) helps give us a clearer perspective on the events of our lives.

Mindfulness is quite a buzz word these days, but did you know that it is particularly important to DBT? In fact, the mindfulness skills are central or “core” to DBT and support all other DBT skills. In practice, mindfulness is about the repeated effort of letting go of judgments and bringing back awareness to the present. Mindfulness is simply being where we are and accepting it as we are - eyes open, aware, awake, and attentive.

Presence Therapy is known in the community for offering comprehensive DBT therapy, but not everyone knows what that even means! DBT, or dialectical behavioral therapy, is quite a mouthful - and honestly just as big a commitment for therapists and clients alike, though well worth it. Created by Marsha Linehan, DBT is an evidenced-based cognitive-behavioral treatment that demonstrates effectiveness for a wide range of mental health concerns. Put more simply, DBT uses skill development, teamwork, and relationship to increase acceptance through mindfulness and distress tolerance, along with change through emotion regulation and interpersonal effectiveness. Presence will be providing an easy reference to some of these DBT skills through our DBT Skills Series over the next few months, so keep an eye out and touch base with any questions.

Please join us in welcoming Evan Miller to the Presence team!

Evan brings relevant psychological research and information to session to help clients understand themselves in context. He knows that psychology as a discipline is rapidly growing and new research as to our inner workings can help to understand our personal hang-ups and troubling behaviors. This quest for learning has led to a deep personal commitment to understanding treatment approaches from the inside out so they can be adapted to best suit client need.

Evan believes the focus of therapy is unique to every client and that their relationship with their clinician is just as important. He likes a direct approach and values honesty because he’s seen that if we can learn to be honest and more accepting, life becomes easier, problems become solvable, and we become more capable of being kind to ourselves and others. This work is not always easy, but he is committed to creating a collaborative and safe space for clients to face their challenges as they come.

Did you know that thought patterns can have a direct effect on both our emotional and behavioral responses? Sometimes if we pause to identify and reframe maladaptive thoughts we may find that the situation takes a different shape. Ask yourself... how are past experiences and current emotions filtering an issue at hand?
