Robert Louis Gonczy, fondly known as Bob, was born on August 4, 1940, in Chicago, IL and passed away peacefully on February 22, 2026, in Merrillville, IN. He lived a life characterized by dedication to his family, unwavering patriotism, and a commitment to his community.

Bob's education culminated in his graduation from Morocco High School in 1959, after which he earned the distinction of serving honorably in the U.S. Army, reflecting his deep sense of duty to his country as a proud veteran.

Throughout his life, Bob was well-regarded for his contributions to his profession as a carpenter. He possessed a wonderful skill in woodworking, which allowed him to create not just practical pieces but also treasured memories for those around him. His passion extended beyond his craft; he enjoyed sight-seeing and visiting old monuments and cemeteries, which speaks to his appreciation for history and the stories of those who came before him.

Family was at the forefront of Bob's life. He was a devoted husband to Barbara Gonczy of Rensselaer, IN, and a loving father to four children: Bob (Diane) Gonczy of Morocco, IN, Donald Gonczy of Lafayette, IN, Ronald (Tammy) Gonczy of Morocco, IN and Robyn (Derek) Kormendy of Morocco, IN. While his family has endured the heartache of loss with the passing of one daughter, Barbara Renee Gonczy, as well as his parents, Louis and Elizabeth (Dickenson) Gonczy, and three brothers: Michael, Patrick, and Charlie Gonczy, Bob's legacy of love and the support he provided will continue to resonate within the hearts of many.

In addition to his familial roles, Bob contributed to his community as the Past Commander of the Newton County American Legion, marking another one of his proudest accomplishments. Stephen R. Brandenburg, affectionately known as Steve, passed away peacefully on February 19, 2026, at the age of 84. Born on July 11, 1941, in Madison, Indiana, he was the only child of Roy and Doris Brandenburg. From a young age, Steve exhibited a vibrant spirit characterized by a love for athletics and the outdoors, excelling in basketball, football, and track. His passion for sports was only rivaled by his enjoyment of hunting and fishing, pursuits he cherished throughout his life.

Steve's academic journey began at Indiana State University, where he aimed for a teaching degree while also playing football for the Indiana State Sycamores. Among his notable achievements, he set an enduring individual game scoring record of 24 points, a testament to his athletic prowess that remained unbroken for 50 years. It was during these formative years that he met Sandra “Sandy” Klinker, and they were united in marriage on December 30, 1961.

Following the completion of his degree in 1963, Steve began his career in education as a Science teacher and Head Football Coach at Decatur High School in Decatur, Indiana. His commitment to teaching and coaching laid a strong foundation for a life dedicated to inspiring young minds. In 1974, Steve took on the role of defensive coordinator at Rensselaer Central High School, a position he held until 1996. His tenure was marked by significant accomplishments, including leading the 1977 undefeated football team, a crowning achievement in his coaching career. Alongside coaching, he continued to teach advanced Biology, eventually becoming the head of the Science Department before retiring in 2003.

Family was of utmost importance to Steve. In 1962, he and Sandy welcomed their first child, Debra. Later, in 1970 their second daughter Marianne was born followed by the birth of their son Jeff in 1972 and son Dan in 1973. Their family grew as they embraced a life filled with love and support. Steve's devotion extended to his five grandchildren: Nick Kempker, Brock Hall, Joe Hall, Isabella Brandenburg, and Bo Brandenburg, who brought him immeasurable joy and pride.

After retirement, Steve channeled his energy into gardening and farming, meticulously tending to his family property, where he cultivated an impressive vegetable garden, an apple orchard, and beautiful flowers. His witty, intellectual spirit was complemented by his honesty, strength, and unwavering work ethic—qualities that endeared him to those who knew him.

Al's dedication to his career as a pharmacist spanned over 57 years, during which he served at various pharmacies in Jasper and Newton counties. For three decades, he was a familiar face at Fagen Pharmacy, primarily at their DeMotte, IN store. His tenure culminated in his retirement in 2014, at which point, he held the distinguished title of the oldest working pharmacist in the state of Indiana, having worked diligently until he was 80.

He grew up in Re*****on, IN where he displayed an early entrepreneurial spirit by mowing lawns and delivering newspapers. He graduated from Re*****on High School in 1952, where he showcased his musical talents by playing cornet and trumpet in the school band. Al pursued rigorous studies in math, biology, chemistry, physics, English, and Latin to prepare for pharmacy school, graduating fourth in his class. He then attended Purdue University, where he earned his Doctorate from the Purdue School of Pharmacy in 1956.

Life for Al was enriched beyond his professional commitments. He married his beloved wife, Donna Mae (Lindahl) Thomas, on April 24, 1977. He was a proud grandfather of 20 grandchildren, a cherished great-grandfather to 32 great-grandchildren, a great-great-grandfather to 2 great-great-grandchildren, and was excited to welcome two great-great-grandchildren on the way. His memory will also be honored by his three sisters, Sally, Linda, and Susan (Joaquin), and four brothers-in-law: Delmar Lindahl, Thomas (Carolyn) Lindahl, Richard (Jeanie) Lindahl, and Larry (Kim) Lindahl.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Donna Mae (Lindahl) Thomas; his parents, Kenneth Russell and Eva Lucille (Dawson) Thomas; his daughter, Sheri Baldwin; his granddaughter, April Peercy; and three brothers, Allen, William, and Richard Thomas. He also mourned the loss of his brother-in-law, Charles Lindahl; sister-in-law, Phyllis Curtis; father-in-law, Charles Lindahl; and mother-in-law, Violet Lindahl.
