šŸ’„ Student Spotlight on Riley šŸ’„

Today we want to introduce a face that will be treating with us for a little bit. Riley is a Cox College Occupational Therapy Master’s Program student. She is in her first Level II clinical experience, which means she will be taking over treatment around the clinic soon! When Riley is not at DST or studying for school, she enjoys spending time with her friends and her dog, playing golf and cooking. Please help us welcome Riley while she learns and grows in our facility.

šŸ’„Employee Spotlight on Ashlyn šŸ’„

Today we introduce Ashlyn, our new volunteer coordinator. Ashlyn brings a wealth of experience in both non-profit and the equine world to her role at Dynamic Strides. Ashlyn has over 10 years of equine experience, including 5 years of instructing riding lessons, horsemanship sessions, and summer camps at a local lesson barn. In addition to her equine experience, she has a long history providing education and support to volunteers in a variety of settings. She is excited to bring those two worlds together in support of DST’s mission and vision to serve the community.

Outside of her time in the barn, Ashlyn enjoys sewing and crafting, thrifting and spending time with her cats, Chai and Junebug. She is also the caretaker for a collection of over 70 houseplants!

Please help us welcome Ashlyn to the DST Team!

šŸ’„ Employee Spotlight on Paige šŸ’„

Today we celebrate Paige’s one year anniversary with Dynamic Strides Therapy. In her first year with us Paige has made a huge impact on our Speech Therapy team. She is a kind and inclusive therapist who works hard to be sure that her patients, and all of the DST families, feel safe, supported, and included. She has stretched her comfort zone by stepping into the arena for some hippotherapy sessions and has excelled at use of that specialty service. A lifelong student, Paige is also taking an advanced feeding course to bring more specialty support to our patients. We are excited to have Paige as a part of DST and look forward to the growth and opportunities she brings to our therapy team in the years to come.

If you see Paige out and about, help us celebrate her one-year anniversary in style!

Meowdy –

Hello friends! I am back and fully rested from my encounter with the neighborhood roving cat. In a twist of fate, I have decided that he is actually a friend, so no harm no foul… But he’s welcome in the pastures now.

This week I have been told that there will be some special events going on in the facility to correspond with the Paralympics! I don’t know what that means, but apparently some of the therapists are a little obsessed with curling and are trying to find a way to include training for their Olympic dreams with their day jobs. I’m not holding my breath but check out the clinic this week for some Paralympic dream fulfillment opportunities. I’m taking a nap to prepare.

šŸ’„Employee Spotlight on Abigail šŸ’„

Today we want to take a moment to introduce Abigail, our Equine Assistant. Abigail comes to Dynamic Strides with a solid history and experience in the equine assisted services world. Abigail graduated with a Bachelors of Science in Equestrian Studies with a focus in Therapeutic Riding from Rocky Mountain College in Billings, Montana. She obtained her Certified Therapeutic Riding Instructor credential (CTRI) in 2018 and has been working in the industry since then. She brings experience from Veterans, adult and youth programming to her role assisting with the hippotherapy program here at DST.

Abigail and her husband transitioned from St Louis to the Springfield area recently for his educational journey, and they are are loving the slower pace of life here. When Abigail isn't involved with therapy services or teaching riding lessons, she enjoys hiking, reading, snuggling with her cats and occasionally fox hunting with the Ozark Highland Hounds.

If you see Abigail out and about, please take a moment to help us welcome her to the DST team!

For so many of our patients, the biggest highlight of being at DST is the chance to connect with our incredible horses. šŸ“šŸ’›

While mounted services aren’t always the right fit for every patient, we can almost always find a meaningful way for each individual to interact with a horse. When mounted sessions are appropriate, our therapists connect the benefits of equine movement to a patient’s specific functional goals in PT, OT, or Speech. Sometimes those connections are obvious. Sometimes they’re more subtle. But the purpose is always the same: support progress in the goals that matter most.

Even when mounted services are recommended, there can be important steps before getting started. Patients need to tolerate the horse’s movement, have enough mobility to sit astride, and build the endurance necessary to truly benefit from equine movement. Some may also need to address behavioral or safety concerns first.

Every patient begins with the same foundation — learning how to mount safely, how to position their body, what the movement feels like, and how to dismount with confidence.

Today, we’re excited to share a special milestone: one of our favorite patients experiencing his very first mounted session with Cali. ✨ It’s moments like these that remind us why we do what we do.

šŸ’„ Employee Spotlight: Hannah šŸ’„

Today, we’re celebrating Hannah’s one-year anniversary as a valued member of our occupational therapy team!

Hannah joined DST a year ago with a passion for pediatrics and a strong desire to support children and families in any way she could—and she has truly stepped up. She is always eager to learn about new diagnoses and treatment tools, consistently researching creative activities and intervention methods to better serve her patients and their families. Hannah collaborates seamlessly with our entire team, ensuring every child who walks through our doors receives thoughtful, comprehensive care.

In addition to her work with families, Hannah is a dedicated supporter of our student program. She welcomed her first COTA student last summer and has been a wonderful mentor and advocate for student learning.

We are so grateful to have Hannah on our team—and so are the many families she serves.

If you see Hannah this week, please join us in celebrating her dedication to our mission and vision. Thank you, Hannah! šŸŽ‰

Our horses support far more than mounted services. We intentionally use barn-based partnerships to work toward a wide range of therapy goals.

✨ Grooming builds balance and range of motion.
✨ Catching and handling horses strengthens emotional regulation skills.
✨ Weighing and measuring the horses supports executive functioning skills.
✨ Even feeding can be heavy work.

While these skills can certainly be addressed in the clinic, they’re often more engaging—and more meaningful—when developed in the barn.

Meowdy,

Well… I had myself a very eventful weekend. There was a feline intruder spotted in the horse pasture and obviously I was the only qualified officer on duty to handle the situation.

ā€œDispatchedā€ might be a strong word.
ā€œSupervised the humans while they handled itā€ is probably more accurate.

Truthfully, the staff may not mind sharing the pasture… but I most certainly do. There is room for ONE cat around here — and you’re lookin’ at ’em. 😼✨

In the line of duty, I may have earned a tiny battle wound on my elbow. Nothing dramatic… just enough to require a little vet visit, some antibiotics, and pain meds. (I was very brave. Treats were accepted as compensation.)

The silver lining? I got a cozy weekend stay with Grace šŸ’• So honestly… 8/10 experience. Would prefer no elbow bite next time.

My elbow’s still a smidge sore, so if you see me prowling around quietly or tucked away somewhere, please don’t take it personally. I’m just resting up so I don’t get a little… hissy with my friends.

All is well. The kingdom remains safely under my watch. Please enjoy a few photos from my weekend away.

Tomorrow, on Valentine's Day, we celebrate the amazing kids and families who fill our clinic with courage, laughter, and determination every single day. šŸ’•

In pediatric therapy, we see love in action:
ā¤ļø A child practicing a new skill again and again
🧔 A caregiver cheering on every small victory
šŸ’› A therapist celebrating progress—big and small

We are so proud of the hard work our patients put in and so grateful for the trust families place in us. Every milestone reached is a reminder that growth happens best in a supportive, encouraging environment.

This Valentine’s Day, we’re sending extra love to all our patients and the families who stand beside them. šŸ’ŖšŸ’—

Finding ways to keep our herd fit, mentally supported and ready to work is a full time job! In fact it's a couple of jobs! Keeping that responsibility fun and engaging can sometimes be challenging. For the next 100 days, our equine team will be engaging in a horsemanship challenge in the hopes of adding a little fun to this process.

Sophie, our equine manager, will be working with our newest addition, Hank. Hank is learning all about our work and this focused time will help accelerate that process.

Abigail, our equine assistant, will be working with Cole. While Cole is a key part of our unmounted programming, he is often overlooked with regards to fitness and mental health work.

Ashlyn, our volunteer coordinator, will be working with Melvin. Melvin is a key member of our team, and dedicated time supporting his fitness and mental health is critical to keeping him active.

Toby, our program director, will be working with Felix. Having recently received joint injections for mild arthritis, we are working on developing a ground based fitness program for Felix to keep him in shape without the stress of added riding while those injections do their job.

Join us here every week to see how each of our teams is doing.

Meowdy -

It's Valentine's week and the staff has decided that I am everyone's special Valentine šŸ˜ They put up a devotion to me on the back window, and I'm just so happy they decided to share it with everyone.

Do you have a favorite Valentine (besides me, obviously)?
