The Weinberg Courtyard at Grancell Village hosted a special Martin Luther King, Jr. Day celebration honoring the shared values and traditions of the Jewish and African American communities, including those who identify as both Black and Jewish. The music was unforgettable, blending Jewish songs and themes with gospel sounds rooted in the African American tradition. 🤝
Cantor Mike Stein led the program, performing a mix of traditional selections and original compositions, joined by a talented group of musicians who had the audience clapping and singing along. The program featured a meaningful conversation with Cantor Jenni Asher, a gifted musician and singer and the first African American woman ordained as a cantor in the United States, who currently serves as cantor and music director at Hamakom LA. Guests also experienced a powerful first-person portrayal of Harriet Tubman, bringing to life her role in the Underground Railroad.
The celebration was a meaningful way to commemorate Martin Luther King, Jr. Day and reflect on the shared history, identities, and commitment to justice that connect these communities. 🙌
