When it’s your own child, “wait and see” isn’t enough.

Meet Lyla, age 9. She just received her very first pair of glasses — Stellest Myopia Control lenses.

As both an optometrist and a mom, this decision was deeply personal. I grew up with progressive myopia. Every year, my prescription increased. I know how quickly childhood nearsightedness can worsen without guidance.

Myopia management isn’t just about seeing clearly today.

It’s about guiding how the eye grows over time.

Starting early can help:
✔ Slow prescription changes
✔ Support healthier eye growth
✔ Reduce long-term eye health risks

If your child’s prescription increased this year, it may be time to explore options.

We’re here to guide you!💙

I’m often the first doctor to mention myopia control to parents of a nearsighted child.

In my clinic, we discuss options such as:
• Orthokeratology (Ortho-K) – overnight lenses that gently reshape the cornea so children can see clearly during the day without glasses
• Stellest lenses – designed to help slow the progression of nearsightedness
• Low-dose atropine eye drops – used to reduce how quickly myopia progresses

These approaches are not just about clearer vision today.
They are designed to slow eye elongation and help protect long-term eye health.

Because the goal isn’t just to correct vision, it’s to support healthy eye development while your child is still growing.

If you’ve noticed your child’s prescription getting stronger each year, we’re here to help.

Outdoor play is one of the simplest habits that supports healthy eye development in children. Studies show that spending at least 2 hours outdoors daily may help reduce the risk of worsening myopia.

Spending time outdoors supports healthy visual development. Exposure to natural light stimulates dopamine release in the retina, which plays a key role in regulating eye growth. This helps slow excessive elongation of the eye, a primary factor in myopia progression. Distance viewing also allows the visual system to relax from prolonged near focus, reducing accommodative stress.

Simple outdoor ideas this weekend:
• Park play
• Bike rides
• Backyard games
• Nature walks

Protecting your child’s vision can start with something as simple as time outside. 🌿☀️

To me, passion is an unbreakable commitment to a cause you believe in. It’s what keeps you grounded when things feel uncertain.

For me, that cause is myopia control. Knowing that what I do every day can change a child’s life and protect their future vision is what keeps me steady and keeps me showing up.

It’s caring enough to show up even on the days that feel heavy. It’s thinking about your patients and your team long after you’ve left work.

In a small business, passion means:
• Taking ownership of every detail because it matters
• Creating a meaningful, positive impact in a patient’s life, not just completing a transaction
• The willingness to keep reinventing, adjusting, and learning, even when you’re tired

The truth is, passion is what turns stress into purpose. Without it, everything feels like pressure. With it, even the hard days feel worth it.

Is your child’s vision getting worse every year? Let’s talk about why.

When your child’s prescription jumps from -2.00 to -3.00, it’s not just a number change… it’s a sign their eye is continuing to grow longer.

And as the eye elongates, nearsightedness gets stronger.

Here’s what I look for clinically:
• Myopia starting before age 10
• More than 3 hours a day on near work or screens
• Prescription increasing 0.50–1.00 diopter within a year

We now have real ways to slow this down while your child is still growing.

Myopia control lenses.
OrthoK.
Low-dose atropine.
Stellest Lenses

Early action can change the outcome.
If your child’s prescription changed this year, let’s talk.

That's Myokymia. I also get these annoying eye twitches.

POV: your eyelid starts twitching and suddenly you think something is seriously wrong 😅

Relax… it’s called myokymia aka your body’s way of saying:
👉 “maybe less stress”
👉 “maybe less coffee”
👉 “maybe get some sleep”

It’s a tiny muscle spasm in your eyelid that comes and goes… annoying, yes. Dangerous, no.

Usually triggered by the usual suspects:
☕ too much caffeine
📱 too much screen time
😴 not enough sleep
💧 dry eyes
😵‍💫 life being… life

Good news… it’s harmless and almost always goes away on its own.

Bad news… your third iced coffee might not be helping 😂

Save this for the next time your eye starts doing its own thing 👀

Every parent asks me this… so here are the 5 habits I recommend as an Optometrist and mom.

In clinic, I often see children whose prescriptions continue to increase not just because of genetics, but because of daily habits that quietly affect how their eyes develop.

The good news is, many of these are simple to adjust at home.

A little awareness early on can make a meaningful difference in protecting your child’s long-term eye health.

When a child’s prescription reaches −5.00, it’s not just about needing thicker glasses.

At this level of nearsightedness, the eye has already grown longer than normal. As the eye elongates, the delicate tissues inside the eye become more stretched and vulnerable over time.

Higher levels of myopia are associated with increased lifetime risk of eye conditions such as:

• Retinal detachment
• Myopic macular degeneration
• Earlier cataracts
• Glaucoma

Another concern is progression.

A child who is −5.00 today may not stay −5.00. During the growing years, prescriptions can continue increasing. What starts at −5.00 could potentially become −7.00 or −8.00 in the future if the eye keeps elongating.

This is why many eye doctors today focus not only on correcting blurry vision, but also on monitoring and managing myopia progression early in childhood.

Clear vision today matters.
But protecting the long-term health of your child’s eyes matters even more.

When my daughter first became nearsighted, I didn’t reach for regular glasses.

As an optometrist, I knew glasses would help her see clearly… but they wouldn’t slow down how her eyes continue to grow.

Here’s what guided my decision:

• Early Age of onset: 8 years old
• Increased indoor time during COVID
• Strong genetic risk from both parents
• My own experience with -6.00 myopia

I didn’t want to wait and watch it get worse.

That’s why I chose OrthoK lenses for my daughter

These are custom lenses worn overnight that gently reshape the cornea.
Clear vision during the day without glasses.
And more importantly… they help manage myopia progression.

If your child has recently become nearsighted, there may be options beyond regular glasses.

I often see the look on a parent’s face when I tell them their child is nearsighted. It can feel confusing and overwhelming at first.

As an optometrist and a mom, I understand that moment.

In my clinic, I guide parents through the next steps and explain what it means for their child’s eyes.

But even if you’re not my patient, here’s what I want every parent to know and what I encourage you to do next.

1. Understand what myopia means
Nearsightedness happens when the eye grows longer than normal. Glasses help your child see clearly, but they don’t stop the eye from continuing to elongate as your child grows.

2. Monitor how quickly the prescription changes
Children’s prescriptions can increase during their growing years. Regular eye exams help track whether the myopia is progressing slowly or quickly. Ask for the next check-up within 6 months and not a year.

3. Build healthy visual habits at home
Simple habits can support eye health:
• Encourage daily outdoor time
• Take breaks during reading or screen use
• Maintain a healthy reading distance

4. Ask about myopia management options
Many eye doctors discuss ways to slow the progression of myopia, especially when detected early.

It’s also important to know that not every optometrist offers myopia control treatments, as it often requires additional training and technology. If it’s not offered in your clinic, it’s perfectly reasonable to ask for a referral to a doctor who specializes in myopia management.

Because when it comes to children’s vision, prevention and early intervention matter.
