Audiology Today President's Message:

"As the world changes, we must return to the basics: what do we contribute to humanity? Our role is not to perform surgery or treat complex diseases. Our work is helping people with hearing or balance difficulties maximize resilience to live better lives. At its core, audiology is about behavior change. We help parents of infants with hearing loss accept the loss and use hearing aids early."

Tinnitus Severity Linked to Mood, Sleep, and Personality:

Tinnitus affects approximately 10 percent of the U.S. adult population and 14 percent of the world’s population (NIDCD, 2025). Tinnitus can sound different to individuals, and its severity is subjective.

Recently, researchers from McGill University in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, in conjunction with artificial intelligence (AI), created a method to identify warning signs of severe tinnitus.

Influence of the Electrical Dynamic Range (EDR) on Speech Perception, Vocabulary, and Quality of Life in Young Children:

In a prospective longitudinal study involving 102 children, Ching and colleagues (2025) examined the impact of the measured EDR at age three on speech perception in quiet and noise, receptive and expressive vocabulary, and health-related quality of life (HRQOL) at age nine. Correlation and regression analyses were utilized to determine the effect of EDR, as measured at three years of age, on the children’s performance at nine years of age (speech perception, vocabulary, HRQOL).

Our Story

The American Academy of Audiology was founded in January of 1988 when a group of audiology leaders met at the invitation of Dr. James Jerger at the Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas. The purpose of the study group was to establish an independent, freestanding national organization run by and for audiologists. The new organization would be uniquely sensitive to the professional issues and the professional concerns affecting all audiologists. A Charter Advisory Committee was formed to elect officers, adopt bylaws, establish membership requirements and set up a national office. Jerger was elected the first President. The Charter of Incorporation for the Academy was filed in Nashville, Tennessee, in June 1988. The first national convention of the Academy was held in Kiawah Island, South Carolina in April 1989 with some 600 attendees. As an indication of the phenomenal growth of the Academy, the 13th Annual Convention was held in San Diego during April 2001 with more than 7,300 attendees. The Academy asks our followers to not post any negative, offensive, denigrating, and/or completely out of context content, pictures, or videos. All posts by followers can be removed based upon the discretion of Academy Board of Directors and staff. When tagging any Academy-related social media platform, avoid using statements, photos, video, or audio that could be viewed as malicious, obscene, threatening, intimidating, or that might constitute harassment or bullying.
