During the holiday season, Reston Hospital colleagues show their gratitude to the community and give back in several ways. Annually, we participate in a food drive, supporting Cornerstones since we know 1 in 8 families struggle with food insecurity. And this year, not only did we collect 1,100 lbs of food, but we were fortunate to partner with Cornerstones by volunteering at their FREE from Hunger Center unpacking, sorting, and weighing food being dropped off by so many generous community organizations.

No matter what you’ve got cooking this , remember to prioritize safety. In crowded kitchens and around deep fryers, accidents can happen fast. Each year around Thanksgiving, there’s an increase in cooking-related burn injuries, and unattended cooking is the primary cause, according to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA). Follow these tips for what to avoid if you or someone else needs .

If you suffer a mild or first-degree burn, the affected area may swell or turn red. You can treat these burns at home with simple first aid steps:

🧼Clean the area with soap and cool water.
🧴Apply a thin layer of ointment.
🩹Dress the wound with sterile non-stick gauze.
💊Take over-the-counter medication to manage pain.

For more serious burns, immediate medical attention is critical. You can always find help fast at your local emergency room — but for complex cases, specialized care is available through our broader HCA Healthcare network, home to 11 American Burn Association-recognized burn centers across nine states.

Have you heard of ? They’re small areas of dense, rounded lung tissue that go undetected for most people, although they’re often found during imaging tests, like a CT-scan or an X-ray. While generally these nodules are not cancerous, the American Lung Association stresses the importance of getting them checked, as they could be an early sign of lung cancer.

You may have a higher risk of developing lung nodules if you’ve had any of the following:
🦠Bacterial or viral infections
🏭Exposure to air pollution
🫁Chronic inflammatory conditions
🚬Tobacco use
🎗️Cancer

If you think you may be at risk or if you’re having symptoms, talk with your doctor or schedule an appointment with one of our experts: https://bit.ly/4457fxs

Congratulations to April Chenoweth, RN, ICU who was nominated as Reston Hospital's recent Daisy Award winner for extraordinary nurses! April was acknowledged for her phenomenal compassion to a family whose family matriarch experienced her last breath at Reston Hospital. This nurse, described as an "angel," anticipated every need and quietly supported and comforted each family member and her patient through her final moments.

It was such a moving experience that the nominator ended up joining the Reston Hospital team to work alongside our colleagues who treat our patients like family.

is the leading cause of cancer deaths in America, according to the American Lung Association. And for many people, there are no symptoms until later stages of the disease. That’s why lung cancer screening is so important. Screening can detect cancer early, when it’s most treatable. It’s performed through a low-dose computerized tomography (CT) scan — an X-ray of your lungs that could lead to life-saving care.

Not sure if you should get screened? Follow these guidelines from HCA Healthcare’s Sarah Cannon Cancer Network. If you’re between age 50 and 80 and you meet at least one of the criteria shown here, you’re eligible for a low-dose CT scan. If you have Medicare, you must be 50 to 77 to be eligible. Thank you to Fairfax County Public Schools for giving Reston Hospital the opportunity to table at your 2026 Benefits Fair and share all of the exciting, expanding services we have at our facility. We enjoyed meeting so many community members and discussing our new open-heart program, the expansion of our cancer care services, and our Level III NICU! Additionally, we were thrilled to schedule many of our educators for their mammogram screening at our Women's Imaging Center! We also spread the word on all of the free and affordable classes and events being offered at Reston Hospital and how our trauma team can bring some of these opportunities to the schools, like Stop the Bleed classes! Thank you, FCPS teachers and administrators for you all you do for the children in our community!

new screening technologies can detect lung cancer at early stages — often before obvious symptoms like a persistent cough or hoarseness appear. Early detection saves lives. Across our broader HCA Healthcare system of care, the Sarah Cannon Cancer Network treats over 12,000 lung cancer cases annually, giving us deep insight into how early intervention can make all the difference.

You may qualify for lung cancer screening if you’re a current or former smoker, or if you have prolonged exposure to secondhand smoke. To learn more or if you’re experiencing any of the symptoms shown here, schedule an appointment with one of our experts: https://bit.ly/4raE46e
