Please take the time to read the
"fine print!"
I posted the following message on Facebook this morning because that is the platform where I gained my core following, but I know that many of you are not on Facebook, or miss posts because of the algorithm.
I am feeling some kind of way about posting this, because I know most people don’t want to read the “fine print.” Most people will never read this entire message. They will scroll on because a post like this is a damn book, and they don’t want to read it. I always say, people who read a lot, and read critically, will become better writers/communicators. That cannot happen if you don’t read. So, I am asking that you take the time to read this. This was going to be my last paragraph, but I am moving it to the top of this post in the hopes that people get the message.
Over the years since we've been offering live, and now recorded classes, we are seeing that people don't understand how this works. I'm thinking about sending out an e-mail to the entire customer base because not everybody is on Facebook, and even few of them are in my private customer group. However, I've had an increased number of messages from people who clearly do not read the product descriptions of what they're purchasing and have full access to the information on our website.
The website communication is enhanced by me discussing it on Facebook where appropriate. One would think that these issues come from first time customers who did not have access to this information, but I have seen an uptick of this situation occurring with customers who ARE a part of our group, and/or follow me on Facebook.
I announced over a year ago that we were now able to automatically send out live class links in your receipt. I also announced that you could order more than one class per order and that you would get all the live links for class in your receipt. You can even order recordings and live classes in the same order. I’ve explained that too. You will get the live link for the live classes, and I must manually add you to the recordings and send you an access email to the link for the recordings.
When we started offering recordings, we explained to everybody that we had to manually enter your enrollment on the drive after they made their purchase. Those links will NOT come to you automatically. I've even put the following text on each class description:
*Please use a Gmail email address for your registration. We use Google Meet and Google Drive to store all recordings.* Class recordings are sent within a week of the actual class date. All students ordering class recordings have to be manually entered in Google Drive. Please be patient while we get you added after you make your purchase.
So, I am a little confused as why people order a class recording and immediately e-mail me and email/message me right away to tell me they didn't get the link. Some will even order from a non-Gmail email, and I must reply to their order requesting a Gmail address. This is due to Google restrictions, not mine. Due to system limitations, and the security measures we put forth in the files that we share, we must add people to those files MANUALLY.
Because of the spiritual nature of the things that we are selling, we also know that we can't sell them to everybody. Sometimes we get an order from someone we know is a problem, and we don't want them having access to our products or recordings. My workflow is VERY intentional. We don’t teach everyone who is willing to give us their money. In fact, I’ve told you all publicly of situations where I refunded somebody because all money is not good money. We must oversee the process of who is getting what information, and refund people who we do not want to have said information/products from our hands.
As Spiritualists/Magicians/Hoodoos, etc. I was hoping people would understand this as well.
Maybe the problem is the recent expectation of immediate automatization of the things that we buy online. While we are available through e-commerce, our business it doesn't operate like the rest of commercialism. This is why we offer handmade products and live instruction. We remain more human than electronic. In fact, a true Spiritualist understands this need because when we don’t, we lose our connection with our own spirit and the Spirits who walk with you.
Yesterday someone thought they didn’t get a link to a recording because they ordered two classes in their order. This has been explained to that client (as well as the general customer base) involved through many ways (including in the text for ALL class listings). Every single time an improvement comes along that helps place an order, I communicate it with you. And in case you miss it, please see the text above that we put on every class so that you all understand how our process works.
I've even sent out newsletters about any changes or ordering improvements/challenges, but only 30% of you ever open my emails. Thanks to technology, I can see how many people are opening these emails, and how many sales are attributed to a particular e-mail. Those metrics are important when making business decisions about how to reach our client base.
An additional concern that reduces my productivity (I could be packing an order right now instead of writing this book.) is when people fail to even read the front page of the website and our policies of 5-10 business days for shipping an order. I am not an Amazon warehouse. I am currently a crew of ONE. I have assistance on occasion, but everyone who works (or volunteers) for this organization has a life and a job/school. They will come and help me when things get too intense, but I have scaled my business to be able to handle all the things (from webmaster, marketing, packaging, product procurement and creation) on my own.
My business is built on handmade spiritual products made with care and formulated by me. I don’t have a staff pouring candles for me or sewing Mojo Bags/Titty Gris. I am doing that. My hands touch all parts of my business, and I set reasonable expectations of when you can expect to get something from me. I would hope that would be the reason you shop with me. In fact, I have always been faster at delivering my products than the other hand-made product offerings in the spiritual community.
Sure, you can order something mass marketed that goes out the next day, and if that works for you, so be it. I’d like to think that the people who seek out my classes, services and products are doing so because they understand their value and thought and consideration I put into what you purchase.
Every time you engage with me about things I’ve already said/posted/been doing for years acting brand new, causes me to lose time. I don’t want to get to the place where I ignore customers’ messages because that is sh*tty service. But sometimes people are just sh*tty customers who don’t take the time to read the information that informs their purchase. It’s gotten so bad, that I have template text with responses to all the inquiries, so I don’t have to keep retyping things that I have already placed on the front page of my website and in product descriptions. I am constantly working to improve communication on my website, but I can only do so much. I hate feeling like I am screaming into the void.
As a consumer, I make sure to read information from the merchant, so I do not slow down the process of allowing them to deliver my purchase because I am asking them to restate things that were clearly laid out to me at the time of purchase. Honestly, I wish I could make things clearer for people, but I feel as though they are not even reading what is already offered to them.
Many of my competitors don’t have a phone number where they can be reached. I do, but I have considered getting it disconnected because when people use it, it is clear they have not visited/read the website, even though they got the number to call from Google. At the end of the day, TLDR: Help me help you by reading the information offered through various channels, and THEN reach out to me if you still have questions.
