Thomas (Tom) Gerald McGiffin born June 28, 1939 in Rice Lake, WI to Francis Hugh and Alma Olga (Hjersjo) McGiffin work on earth was completed on December 11, 2025 in Proctor, MN, after a strong battle with Alzheimer’s/Dementia.
Tom met his Honey-Babe, Gloria Mae (Edlund) in work and play at a barn dance and the two were united in marriage on March 4, 1972. Together they enjoyed square dancing, card club, attending countless musical events (many featuring Tom’s beloved polka), and together building a beautiful legacy on Pinerose Farms, family farm on Norwegian Road in Stanfold Township, where they raised their two children, Todd and Sonja. Tom graduated from Rice Lake Senior High class in 1957. He thoroughly enjoyed his class reunions for many years. As a youth Tom was involved in Luther League, 4-H, attending the State Fair, and active in FFA.
Tom had an extraordinary gift for conversation. He loved visiting with people, learning their stories, and sharing his passion for farming. He welcomed visitors to the farm—offering tractor rides, hosting field trips, and teaching about milking cows and crop production. He also enjoyed learning about his Norwegian heritage and the path his ancestors took from Norway to Minnesota’s Iron Range and settling in Wisconsin. One of his favorite places for quick getaways from the farm was—Duluth, MN.
Known as “Alley Cat” he became a two time State WTPA Pulling Champion in the 70’s with his prized Allis Chalmers One-Eighty. Over the years he earned numerous dairy awards, enjoyed tinkering with antique tractors, and rarely missed the Hungry Hollow and Lakehead Harvest tractor shows.
Driven by hard work, family values and a kind heart Tom’s greatest pride was being a grandpa and a farmer and the love of the farm that he lived on for almost 80 years.
In 1948, at the age of 9, Tom and his family moved from Augusta Street in Rice Lake, WI, to what became Pinerose Farms. At 28, in 1967, he purchased the farm from his parents and lived and farmed there until moving to Brentwood Memory Care, RL in December 2023. Most recently, he made the move to Diamond Willow – Arbor Rose Memory Care in Proctor, MN.
Tom is survived by his son Todd Thomas (Terra) McGiffin and grandson Nick Pawlik-McGiffin; daughter Sonja Mae (Allan) Carlson and grandchildren Adrianna Carlson, Ariel (Jude) Springer, Allana Carlson, and Austin Carlson. He is also survived by his brother Richard (Monica) McGiffin; cousins Doug (Cathy) Hjersjo and Sharon Nelsen; brother-in-law Allen Schneider; sister-in-law Barb (John) Rowe; many nieces & nephews; Godson Jason Nelson and special friend Lois Uchytil. Preceding him in death were his parents, grandparents, his wife Gloria, his brother Robert McGiffin, and many other dear family members—no doubt greeting him at heaven’s gates with lutefisk and lefse.
The family would like to thank Vista Prairie at Brentwood in Rice Lake, WI, Diamond Willow Memory Care in Proctor, MN and Essentia Hospice of Duluth, MN for their loving care and compassion that they gave to Tom.
Funeral Services will be held at 2PM Thursday, December 18, 2025 at Bethany Lutheran Church in Rice Lake (where Tom was Baptized, Confirmed and Married), Rev. Sue Eidahl officiating. Friends may call from Noon-2PM Thursday at Bethany Lutheran Church in Rice Lake. A lunch and time of shared remembrance will follow in the church fellowship hall after the burial. Appleyard’s Home for Funerals in Rice Lake is assisting and serving the family with the arrangements.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks—just as Tom would have—that you take a moment to call a neighbor or friend, or stop by for a visit, perhaps during a quiet drive to appreciate the beauty of God’s countryside.
Memorials are honored and appreciated to the Bethany Radio Fund, as Tom would faithfully listen to the Sunday morning broadcast with his cows. Memorials may also be directed to Hungry Hollow Steam and Gas Engine Club in gratitude for the memories he made there.

Roger Edward Stapek passed away peacefully at his treasured cabin in Birchwood, Wisconsin on December 7, 2025. He was surrounded by family after a short battle with an aggressive stomach cancer.

He is survived by wife Mary Stapek; son Troy Stapek (Beth); daughters Amber Stapek, Tracy Goettl, Tara Woods (Troy), Joey MacDonald (Ian); 12 grandchildren, Nicholas Goettl (Sadie), Madeline Goettl, Julia Goettl (Nata), Lucas Stapek, Ella Stapek, Silas Stapek, Matthew Stapek, Lydia Stapek, Logan Woods, Emma Woods, Riley MacDonald, Gus MacDonald; 1 great grandchild son, Charlie Goettl; and 5 brothers and sisters, including his look alike Jim (Deb).

Roger was born on August 25th 1949 in Mora, Minnesota to Dorothy and Tony Stapek. He was employed at Northfield Hospital and served as the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) for 31 years. During this time he met Maryrose Jantzen and after dating for 8 years they were married in 2001. Together they continued to live in Northfield, before later moving to Anthem, Arizona. Finding the Arizona heat to be too much, they moved to Paris (Texas that is), finding the draw of the small town environment and the Eiffel Tower with a cowboy hat to be too much to pass up. During all of this they continued to spend summers at their cabin in Birchwood, Wisconsin, enjoying the quiet of nature, mornings out on the lake catching fish, and having guests, whether family or friends coming up to visit or his brother-in-law and sister-in-law who live next door.

Wherever Roger lived he found time for golf, woodworking, walking and family. He was a member of Tagalong Golf Course in Birchwood, golfing at least twice a week. He enjoyed woodworking, and could build or fix most anything from picnic benches to the cedar chests on display in the homes of many family members. Every morning he would be up early walking “the property line” and going on one of his daily 4 mile walks.

While Mary did much of the cooking, Roger was known to be the taste tester, finding many of the dishes prepared to be ‘adequate’. This was Roger’s nod of approval for many things and a standing joke in the family.

Roger loved family over everything else. When family was around he was at his happiest so it was fitting that he was surrounded by family during his last few weeks.

Roger will be cremated and a celebration of life will be held in the summer for family and friends to get together and share memories.

Rounding the corner and coming into Birchwood, we will always remember hearing the excitement of the grandchildren. “Grandpa, Grandma, THE BIG FISH”. The big fish or Bluegill statue in Birchwood, will always be a part of our family history. In lieu of flowers, the family is asking that donations be made to the Stapek family for contribution to the Bluegill Restoration Fund.

David John Peterson

Our sky gained one of its brightest stars, as we announce the profound loss of Dave, who truly illuminated the lives of so, so many on Monday, December 1, 2025 at the age of 60 years old.

He was born on August 29, 1965 in Barron, WI to Alton and Alice (Huehn) Peterson. Dave Peterson of Cumberland, WI, was born into a large, beautiful family. He was fiercely loved and admired by his closest siblings, distant cousins and all in-between.

With a knack for all things practical and hands-on, he was the go-to guy for many. He would fix your car, skin your buck, and complete the honey-do list, all with a smile.
Dave showed up for everyone in his life completely and happily, and he found true fulfillment in serving and mentoring others.
Dave advocated for kindness, compassion and helping the next person in line, so he passed on knowledge and valuable life experience to friends, family, and colleagues at every opportunity, leaving pieces of his legacy in all of you, who knew him.

With his immeasurable heart, he poured into his passions and was a lifelong adventure seeker. He cheered loudest for the Green Bay Packers, took yearly fishing trips to Canada, became a volunteer firefighter for the Haugen Fire Department, and his Harley was on the road at the first sight of sunshine. His love for life was boundless; he found community and friendship in every space and used his connections to contribute to the collective good.

He will be remembered so fondly, as we share our memories gained and lessons learned from our relationships with Dave. His last year was filled with inconceivable medical hardship that he faced with bravery and optimism. He lived fully and only had concern with making the most of each day, spending time with those he loved, and being a provider, friend, and Dad to his absolute utmost capacity.

Dave left this sentiment with his family, to share with all of you:

"Just hold on to those moments
And the memories we shared
We're both headed for the same place anyway
I just beat you there."

He is survived by the joys of his life, his 4 children: Dereck Peterson, Brooke Cupp, Austin (Jenee) Peterson, and Saige Peterson; 3 grandchildren: Everly, Mazie, and Ledger; his soulmate, Jodi Peterson; his mother, Alice Edwards Stoeckel; 7 siblings, Bonnie (Steve) Smith, Sandra (Dale) Stoeckel, Bob Peterson (Deb Picknell), Susan Walker, Julie (David) Leader, Ted Stoeckel and Angie Stoeckel; many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father, Al Peterson; a niece Stacey Haynie; and a brother-in-law, Matson Walker.

A celebration of his life will be held on Saturday, December 13, 2025 from 1-4PM at the Bear Lake/Haugen Fire Station, 500 1st Street, Haugen, WI 54841. Appleyard’s Home for Funerals in Rice Lake, WI is assisting and serving the family with the arrangements.
