Dr. Mike recently spent the morning teaching local preschool children about basics of teeth and good oral hygiene - something he always enjoys! Having young kids himself, he's a natural with this audience.
A few takeaways for parents and kids were:
1. "Baby" Teeth Are a Big Deal
Don't be fooled—primary teeth are just as important as adult teeth! They hold the space for future permanent teeth. Because children have high metabolisms, a tiny cavity can turn into a serious abscess in just six months.
2. Parents Are the "Finisher" Until Age 8
While it’s great to let your child practice, they usually don’t have the manual dexterity to clean effectively until they are 7 or 8 years old. Let them brush first to build the habit, but an adult should always "finish the job" to ensure every surface is clean.
3. Keep the Vibes Positive
Your child's first visit should be fun and non-threatening. If you have "dentist anxiety," please keep it to yourself! Kids should feel curious and safe, not scared.
4. Check Your Water
Fluoride is a superhero for strengthening developing enamel. If your home doesn't have fluoridated water, chat with your dentist about local fluoride application to give those growing teeth an extra layer of protection.
