Ethanol Tanker Overturns on I-271 Between Route 94 and Brecksville Road
Granger Township/Medina County, Ohio — The Granger Fire Department and local emergency responders are currently managing the scene of an ethanol tanker that overturned resulting in a full interstate closure between Route 94 and Brecksville Road.
The incident occurred at approximately 4:00 am, when a tanker carrying ethanol overturned in the northbound lanes. Emergency crews, including fire, police, and the hazardous materials team, arrived on scene and immediately initiated containment procedures. The driver was transported to a local hospital for evaluation.
Due to the hazardous nature of the spill, the impacted stretch of interstate has been closed in both directions. Motorists are advised to avoid the area and use alternative routes until further notice. Cleanup and roadway safety assessments are currently underway, and the duration of the closure remains undetermined.
“We appreciate the public’s patience as crews work diligently to secure the area and ensure the safety of everyone involved,” said Lt. Johnathon Tibbs “Our top priority is containing the spill, protecting the community, and reopening the roadway as soon as it is safe to do so.”
Residents in the immediate vicinity are not currently required to evacuate. There is no immediate danger to the public while emergency crews mitigate the situation.
Further updates will be provided as information becomes available.

Important read for first responders regarding response to EV fires 🔥
🔥 Off-gassing from EV thermal runaway causes firefighter injuries 🔥
On 11th April 2025 fire crews from the Sacramento Fire Department attended a high speed EV collision into a tree, and extricated the sole occupant, who was then hospitalised. The incident scattered ~5% of lithium-ion cells from the HV pack across the road. The incident was dealt with by fire officers in the appropriate PPE and breathing apparatus.
In the post operation clean-up, when breathing apparatus was no longer in use, the vehicle battery pack vented the vapour cloud on being moved for towing, and four firefighters suffered inhalation injuries, having been exposed for 1 – 5 minutes to the vapour cloud (in one case, only a single deep breath was taken in the cloud). Four firefighters are still unable to return to work (28 Sep 2025) due to the injuries sustained, which include:
