In honor of Black History Month, we're recognizing Lois Curtis, a Black disability advocate who helped move us closer to a world where disability inclusion is the standard - not the exception.

Lois was an activist and artist whose courage changed disability rights in the United States. As the lead plaintiff in the Olmstead v. L.C. case, she advocated that people with disabilities should be able to live in their communities rather than in institutions. Her efforts helped millions gain the freedom, dignity, and independence they deserve.

At Lifeworks, we carry on Lois’s legacy by supporting people with disabilities to lead self-directed lives in their communities with dignity, access, and belonging.
You can learn more about Lois Curtis and her impact by watching this PBS NewsHour video. We encourage you to watch, share her story, and consider how you can advance disability inclusion in your own community: https://bit.ly/3O5Eo7h

For so long, people with disabilities and their families were pushed out of neighborhoods. Out of the story.

That’s why the Lifeworks Centers for Disability Inclusion matter.
As Wendy, a Lifeworks community member, shared:

“For so long, people with disabilities and their families were tucked away or out of sight. The Lifeworks Center for Disability Inclusion is right in the community, visible, welcoming, and proud. People walk by, see it, and know that belonging lives here. It shows that people with disabilities are part of every neighborhood, every city, and every story. They are not on the sidelines; they are the community.”

The Lifeworks Centers for Disability Inclusion exist to make connection visible in real spaces, in everyday moments, and in the communities we share.

As Mike, a Lifeworks community member, put it: “Belonging lives here.”
That belonging shows up through new friendships, shared moments, and joy that carries beyond our building.
