Physiologically, women need more essential body fat than men. Because of this, women require slightly more body fat for good health. Essential body fat is necessary for insulation, the protection of internal organs, vitamin storage, and hormone regulation to promote a healthy pregnancy. Body fat also changes with age.

Men tend to have greater muscle mass than women, thanks to testosterone, and muscles burn more calories than fat at rest. Muscles also have insulin receptors, which allow men to metabolize blood sugar faster and use glucose for energy.

It's more than just how much you weigh or your body fat percentage!

Clients love the BodPod for tracking their progress over time. For some, it is an extra layer of accountability. For others, it's about experimenting on themselves with real data:

"What would happen if I ate this way?"

"What would happen if I changed this part of my exercise routine?"

or (even better)

✨When you receive your test results, you will see a number labeled "fat mass" and "fat free mass" (both in poundage and percentage).

➡Simply put, your fat free mass is just that: everything except your fat. While we equate this to muscle mass, it actually includes the weight of your organs, tissues and bones as well as the muscle.

Your fat mass is simply the weight of your fat.

💡Remember, as your total body weight changes, these numbers reflect a change in percentage of the total weight being compromised of fat mass or fat free (lean) mass. It is more important to look at the actual pounds of fat mass or lean mass to understand your body composition changes.

💪Weight loss is not necessarily fat loss.

You've been killing it at the gym and your nutrition has been on point. You are super excited to get in the BodPod and see your amazing results because you've lost inches and your clothes are fitting better.

But the number you get doesn't reflect the work you put it. Maybe it only budged a percentage point.

This is extremely common. Remember, your body fat percentage is a percentage of the whole (think back to middle school math for this). If the "whole" changed (your total body weight), the percentage could stay the same depending on the type of weight you lost or gained.

Even if you lost fat, but maintained muscle, your body fat number might not change dramatically. If you lost fat and gained muscle, your percentage might not change dramatically because the total body weight number increased. Your body fat percentage is the percentage of your total weight that is fat.

There are a lot of reasons that you may not see the number you are hoping for and none of them are a reflection on how hard you are working or how consistent you are being with your workouts and nutrition!
