We are seeing a rise in the number of counterfeit car seats being brought in to transport babies home from the hospital. These seats often look identical to real seats; however, they haven’t been safely tested and aren’t built to protect your child in an accident.

Every legal U.S. car seat must meet safety standards, including crash performance and buckle strength. They will have a red certification label that says, “This restraint is certified for use in motor vehicles,” along with the manufacturer’s name, manufacture date, and correct height/weight limits. Many counterfeit car seats skip these requirements, arriving with no certified labels or instructions.

When purchasing a car seat:
• Exercise caution when buying from third-party online retailers.
• Inspect the car seat for missing components, labels, and manuals.
• Verify the model with the American Academy of Pediatrics’ list of current and recent car seat models (https://www.healthychildren.org/English/safety-prevention/on-the-go/Pages/Car-Safety-Seats-Product-Listing.aspx) that meet compliance standards.

Safe Kids Benton-Franklin hosts a free car seat clinic the fourth Saturday of every month from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Kadlec Regional Medical Center parking garage. Stop by to have your car seat checked!

Today, Eugenia Lin, Kadlec dietitian, is celebrating 25 years of service!

When she started at Kadlec in 2001, the facility was just a four-story building with a few departments. Over the years, she has seen significant growth, including the expansion of ICU, the addition of new floors, and a dietitian team growing from just one to eleven.

Beyond her work at Kadlec, Eugenia is a local Boy Scout leader and has been part of the Blue Mountain Council since 2010. She’s a proud mom of three Eagle Scouts and loves exploring and preserving nature with her troop, from the Cascade Mountains to Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico. Watching young scouts develop leadership and a heart for service is one of the most rewarding parts for her.

Today, Edna Felix, Respiratory Care Practitioner, is celebrating 20 years of service.

We asked her what inspired her to begin a career in healthcare and what continues to drive her to stay?
Edna shared, “I fell in love with the healthcare field at a young age watching medical shows like Emergency, Quincy, Trapper John MD, and M.A.S.H. What keeps me in healthcare is the opportunity to serve and care or others. Whether at work or in my personal life, service to others is very important to me. One area I am passionate about in healthcare is educating people about chronic respiratory disease. The peace, comfort, and relief I see on the face of my patients and their family when they better understand their disease process and how to control it warms my heart.“
