April is National Volunteer Month, and we’re pleased to highlight Dr. Joshua Lum, who practices at Kadlec Clinic Kennewick Primary Care.

Dr. Lum volunteers his time at Grace Clinic, which provides free medical, dental, and mental health services to uninsured adults in the Tri-Cities. Kadlec has partnered with Grace Clinic for many years, because we recognize the key role Grace Clinic plays in our community’s healthcare delivery system, and because the Mission of Kadlec and Grace Clinic are similar-to serve all, and to serve with compassion.

Meet Joanne Fankhauser.

Joanne has been a part of the Kadlec Auxiliary since 2001. She began her journey in the printing shop and, when that role came to an end, found her home in the sewing group.

“I love the sewing group - we are like family. And it is such a great feeling to see how many people we help each week with making the comfort pillows, heart pillows, mending and other projects, “shared Joanne. “I count it a privilege to be a member of the Auxiliary all these years and hope I can continue for many more.”

In honor of National Donate Life month, Kadlec caregiver Terry Keith shared the story of her son, Robert Christian, whose selfless gift helped a burn victim, a heart patient, and many others.

"My son passed away April 7, 2016, at the age of 28 of an accidental overdose of a mixture of meds. I did not know he was an organ donor until I was contacted by LifeSharing the day of his passing. This was not an easy decision, and I had literally moments to decide if I was going to fulfill my sons wishes to be that organ donor for someone out there.

“I did finally consent and I am glad I did.

"It is my understanding that someone was the recipient of his eyes, one of his kneecaps, his femoral artery, some skin grafts for a burn victim and his heart valves. I am happy that someone out there has benefited from my son.

"It’s hard and heart wrenching in the moment of being contacted and the final act of donation to give up parts of the person you love in this fashion, but also very comforting to know that your loved one helped someone else to live on. It’s all so time sensitive; you do not have time to wrap your head around what you are about to do. Your heart is in grief mode immediately and shock. This donation is not something that can be sat on and mulled over. You have literally moments to decide.

"My heart goes out to any family member who has been through this."

Meet Beverly Baird.

Beverly has been a volunteer at Kadlec since 1996. She joined the Kadlec Auxiliary after retirement to stay busy. She started as a patient es**rt in the Vineyard lobby transporting patients to appointments, delivering flowers, and discharging patients who were going home. She volunteered alongside her husband Quincey for many years. She initially enjoyed the physical activity of her volunteer role, but when it became too much, she transitioned into volunteering at the Clinical Decision Unit (CDU) information desk. She now assists patients by providing them with directions.

She continues to volunteer because it keeps her engaged and connected with friends at Kadlec.
