Acupuncture for Labor Preparation (Prebirth) vs. Labor Induction — I have MANY thoughts on this topic, but what does the research say?

(For a longer and more nuanced version, visit the link in my bio.)

TLDR — see below:

Generally, “prebirth acupuncture” refers to treatments beginning at 36-37 weeks gestation designed to gently prepare the body for labor, while “induction acupuncture” is meant to initiate contractions and begin active labor.

The energy and intention behind each technique is quite different, as is the evidence to support their efficacy.

The literature to date is in favor of prebirth acupuncture over labor induction acupuncture. There is evidence to suggest prebirth acupuncture has beneficial outcomes for labor such as decreasing the mean time for active labor and reduces likelihood of medical induction.

Labor induction acupuncture can still be a useful option in certain instances as in a) when a medical induction is imminent or b) your doctor or midwife has referred specifically for this style of treatment. In my experience, if the body and baby are ready, acupuncture can provide just enough of a nudge to help tip the scales and help get labor started.

The last few weeks of pregnancy can feel excruciatingly long and the temptation to find a way to the other side into newborn baby bliss is all consuming. I encourage you to trust your care team and your body to know when the time is right and focus on preparation ahead of willing the outcome.

(The dot on the image above is the famous Large Intestine 4, an important point used in prebirth treatments.)

When I speak with clients about the benefits of receiving acupuncture during pregnancy, much of what I say comes from personal experience. I elaborate on this experience in a recent post for and on my resources page. For the TLDR, see below:

I worked with two acupuncturists during my pregnancies: Dr. Christine Cannon in Denver and Kristina Aschenbach in Richmond. In both cases my acupuncturist became an integral part of my care team and served as an essential “check-in” point between regular prenatal visits. My sessions went beyond resolving symptoms and helped nourish a deeper connection to my body, mind, and baby.

Toward the end of pregnancy, my gratitude for the extra reassurance, support, and moments of rest (plus TCM’s famous “prepare the body for labor” points) hit its highest point. I felt more relaxed just seeing the appointment on the calendar, and peace knowing I had taken extra measures to help my pregnancy and labor progress with more balance and ease.

If you have questions about how acupuncture can help support your fertility, prenatal or postpartum journey please get in touch!
