In an effort to shed light on misconduct by one of the nation’s largest health insurance plans, patients and physicians have filed a proposed class-action lawsuit alleging Cigna intentionally underpaid patients’ medical claims.

Families suffer when insurers push trusted providers out-of-network. Even with the No Surprises Billing Act, families can be left with huge bills. Cigna initially told this family the birth of their twins was not an emergency, and the family ended up with bills totaling more than $80,000.

An insurer refused to pay bills related to the premature birth of the Bull family's twins because it said their delivery wasn't an emergency and their stays in the NICU weren't medically necessary.
