This absolute visited me on day AKA BRA day and reminded me exactly why we have this day. She discovered her breast lump at the age of 27 on breast exam and was diagnosed shortly thereafter with aggressive , having NO family history of breast cancer! She initially saw someone who did not recommend breast reconstruction and actually was hesitant to show up at my office for an initial consultation. Now she is so happy she has, because she feels again, even while she is in the midst of her laboring chemotherapy treatments. She is now dedicating her to and others with diagnoses, hoping to spread her story and change lives.

The most important thing for me is your safety. Many people out there lie to their patients about their credentials and shouldn’t be doing plastic surgery (even if they are actual doctors!). It is up to you to check to see if your plastic surgeon is board certified!!!!

When I hear people tell me they hate going to , I’m like “....whaaaa???” I can’t imagine doing anything else!! I every aspect of my (except maybe fighting with the personnel to get surgeries approved 😂). What does a plastic surgeon do?

derives its name from the Greek word “plastike,” which is the art of or sculpting. The very first plastic was documented in , many thousands of years ago. His name was Sushruta and he lived in 6th century BC. Documentation of his reconstructive surgeries still exists today! 🇮🇳👃🏽🥸

Today, plastic surgery is synonymous with surgery, Beverly Hills 90210, botched, the list goes on and on. But what does it mean to me? To me, plastic surgery is an , the art of creating something from nothing, the art of restoring a whole from parts, the art of establishing and . I treat who have been subjected to devastating , patients with diagnoses in need of reconstruction, patients with functional problems that can only be addressed surgically. 👩🏽‍⚕️😷

Yesterday I did a in the morning and a complex surgery in the afternoon. Today I am waiting to perform a perineal (groin) reconstruction using regional muscle flaps from a patient’s thighs. Tomorrow I will be doing secondary surgeries on breast cancer patients, and Friday will be doing a breast reconstruction. And that is just one week! The breadth and scope of plastic surgery is intangible! We specialize from the to the , from the to the . It’s remarkable and I am honored to be able to practice in this field. 😁

Happy and Pacific Islander !!

Today I learned that was first graced by of descent as early as 1635, in Jamestown (which was the first settlement in this great nation and would later become part of the commonwealth of my ). They were the second of documented in The Americas (the first being the Filipinos when they landed in California in 1587).

I had no idea! I thought Indians didn’t immigrate here until way later!!

Being does not define me but is a key point of my that has taken me years to understand and accept. I am so grateful to have a of at my fingertips, the ability to see through two lenses. But even with this added that I was enough to be born with, I still have colored lenses and my own inherent biases. Every day, I work to learn more about others and to understand more about where each of us comes from.

The world today is fraught with despair, violence and conflict. But deep down, it all comes down to one thing. We should ALL treat others the way we wish to be treated ourselves. No matter your race, ethnicity, nationality, color or sexuality - we are all equal. Each breath of life is valuable, and we should work to our differences, not to reject or ridicule them.

I hope we can work to eliminate the heartbreaking uptick in Asian hate crimes that have arisen as had plagued the nation. Isn’t it bad enough that we are being attacked by this virus, without wanting to attack one another?

And covid hasn’t finished rearing its ugly head. My parents’ homeland of continues to be wrecked by , with tens of thousands of people losing their lives every day. The system there is overrun and overburdened, and any ounce of help we can provide will go a long way.

This patient was involved in a motor vehicle collision in January. He sustained a fracture to his lower leg that was treated by . Unfortunately, his incision site became infected and he ended up with soft tissue missing from his anterior leg.

Examine your anterior leg. There is very little extra tissue in this area, which makes it difficult to wounds in this .

What did I do for him? I took tissue from his and transferred it to the lower leg as a free tissue . What is a flap? Unlike a graft, a flap has its own supply. I harvested an anterolateral thigh flap from this young patient’s leg and connected the near the area of his .

Fun fact: the blood supply to the anterolateral thigh flap is the descending branch of the lateral circumflex femoral artery.
