Last week we introduced you to the VB-MAPP now let’s talk about that a little more.
What Is the First Skill Assessed on the VB-MAPP? The Mand!
If your child is being assessed with the VB-MAPP (Verbal Behavior Milestones Assessment and Placement Program), the very first skill we look at is the most important communication skill they can learn – the mand!
So what Is a Mand?
A mand simply put is a request.
When a child asks for something they want or need, they are manding.
🦋Examples:
• Saying “juice” when thirsty
• Pointing to a toy they want
• Bringing you bubbles to open
• Using a communication device to select “cookie”
🦋Why Is Manding So Important?
Manding:
🦋is usually the first form of communication children learn
🦋is motivating—kids request things that matter to them
🦋helps reduce frustration and challenging behaviors
🦋builds the foundation for more advanced language skills
🦋What the VB-MAPP Looks For
During this first section of the assessment, we check:
• Does your child request things they like?
• How many different mands do they use?
• Do they mand only with prompts, or independently?
• Do they use words, gestures, signs, or AAC?
❤️ What This Means for Parents
Strong manding skills help your child get their needs met and feel successful in communicating. When they know how to ask, the world becomes easier — and more exciting — to navigate.
If you ever have questions about your child’s VB-MAPP results or how to support manding at home, we’re happy to help!

What is the VB-MAPP?
If your child is receiving ABA at Beyond
Behavior ABA, you may hear our team talk about something called the VB-MAPP assessment — but what is that?
The VB-MAPP (Verbal Behavior Milestones Assessment and Placement Program) is one tool we use to understand how your child learns, communicates, and interacts with the world. The results of the assessment helps us:
🦋 Identify your child’s strengths
🦋 See how they’re developing language and social skills
🦋 Identify areas where extra support may help
🦋 Create an individualized treatment plan tailored to their needs
The VB-MAPP breaks skills into small, meaningful milestones—things like asking for what they need, playing with others, following directions, or understanding language. As your child meets these milestones, we celebrate their progress and adjust goals to support continued growth.
Our goal is always the same: to help your child thrive, learn, and reach their fullest potential.

If you ever have questions about the VB-MAPP or your child’s ABA program, we’re here to support you every step of the way! 🦋
